PFAS Biotransformation Pathways: A Species Comparison Study

Richard C. Kolanczyk et al.

Summary: Limited availability of fish metabolic pathways for PFAS may lead to risk assessments with uncertainties. A recently created database using a software system called MetaPath was used to compare fish metabolism maps for 10 PFAS across multiple species and systems. The pathways appear to be well conserved, and a composite map would serve as the best basis for metabolite prediction for PFAS lacking fish metabolism studies. This highlights the importance and utility of collating metabolism into a searchable database.

Acyl-CoA Identification in Mouse Liver Samples Using the In Silico CoA-Blast Tandem Mass Spectral Library

Uri Keshet et al.

Summary: Acyl-CoAs are important molecules in fatty acid and energy metabolism. However, there is limited experimental data available for annotating mass spectra of these compounds. In this study, researchers used MassFrontier software and literature annotation to generate a computer-assisted library of 10,934 accurate mass MS/MS spectra, which can be used for untargeted metabolomics studies.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.

A review of the occurrence, transformation, and removal of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater treatment plants

Swadhina Priyadarshini Lenka et al.

Summary: PFAS are widely used in consumer and industrial applications worldwide, with monitoring studies in WWTPs mainly focused on China, Europe, and North America. Short and long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids are widely detected in WWTP influents and effluents, with most WWTPs exhibiting low removal efficiencies for PFAS and biodegradation being the primary mechanism for PFAS transformation in WWTPs.

Structure-Specific Aerobic Defluorination of Short-Chain Fluorinated Carboxylic Acids by Activated Sludge Communities

Shun Che et al.

Summary: The study investigated the aerobic defluorination of C-3-C-5 FCAs by activated sludge communities, with four structures showing defluorination rates greater than 20% and defluorination being demonstrated to occur via cometabolism. These findings help fill the knowledge gap regarding the environmental fate of short-chain fluorinated carboxylic acids and their defluorination/transformation by microorganisms.
