Silver Nanoparticles: Bactericidal and Mechanistic Approach against Drug Resistant Pathogens

Pragati Rajendra More et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their mechanism of action against antibiotic-resistant and biofilm-forming bacteria. AgNPs exert their antibacterial effects through oxidative stress, protein dysfunction, membrane disruption, and DNA damage in bacteria. They also prevent biofilm formation by altering bacterial cell adhesion. However, the medical use of AgNPs is limited by their harmful effects on humans and the environment. The review compiles recent studies on the antibacterial activity of AgNPs and discusses their potential applications in medicine.

Noscapine anticancer drug designed with ionic liquids to enhance solubility: DFT and ADME approach

Ajay Kumar et al.

Summary: Noscapine and its derivatives have shown potential as cough suppressant, anti-cancerous activity, and ability to inhibit the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 and chikungunya. This study focused on designing ionic liquids composed of noscapinium cation with different anions, and analyzing their thermo-chemical data, IR and UV-visible spectra, and ADME behavior. The most soluble and stable ionic liquid among the designed ILs was found to be (R)-5-((S)-4,5-dimethoxy-3-oxo-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-1-yl)-4-methoxy-6,6-dimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-[1,3]dioxolo[4,5-g]isoquinolin-6-ium trifluoromethanesulfonate (IL4) based on DFT calculations.

Are Smaller Nanoparticles Always Better? Understanding the Biological Effect of Size-Dependent Silver Nanoparticle Aggregation Under Biorelevant Conditions

Peter Belteky et al.

Summary: This study revealed that acidic pH and physiological electrolyte content universally induce aggregation of silver nanoparticles, with larger particles demonstrating higher resistance to aggregation compared to smaller counterparts. Extreme aggregation can lead to the complete loss of biological activity for AgNPs, highlighting the importance of colloidal stability. The findings suggest that aiming for the smallest possible nanoparticles may not be the best course of action in order to retain biological activity.
