Visual and colorimetric determination of mercury (II) based on lignosulfonate-capped silver nanoparticles

Xueling Cao et al.

Summary: Lignosulfonate/silver nanoparticles (L-AgNPs) were synthesized using a one-pot method and characterized using various techniques. The L-AgNPs were spherical with a size of 16-22 nm, and the structure of lignosulfonate remained unchanged. The synthetic method is green, simple, and fast, and the L-AgNPs exhibited high selectivity for mercury (II) with a detection range of 0-68 μM and a minimum detection limit of 7 nM. The developed detection method was successfully applied to actual water samples and showed good agreement with a colorimetric method. This study provides a new approach for green chemistry practice and a novel method for mercury (II) detection.

Removal of mercury from flue gas using coal gasification slag

Zhaoxin Wan et al.

Summary: Coal combustion emits mercury, which can be removed using coal gasification fine slag (FS) immobilized with ionic liquids (IL-T and IL-B). The efficiency of mercury removal increased when supported by the ILs. The presence of SO2 had negligible impact on Hg0 capture. The total mercury removal efficiencies exceeded 90% for FS-T and FS-B in a specific atmosphere. The effective adsorption time for FS-T and FS-B was longer than FS, and Hg-0 and Hg2+ were detected in exhaust gas and solid phase.

A machine learning colorimetric biosensor based on acetylcholinesterase and silver nanoparticles for the detection of dichlorvos pesticides

Wonn Shweyi Thet Tun et al.

Summary: An uncomplicated and rapid colorimetric biosensor has been developed for the detection of highly toxic organophosphates. The biosensor utilizes the pesticide dichlorvos as a representative organophosphate and detects its inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase activity, resulting in color changes in solution. The detection can be done by naked eye observation or UV-vis spectrometry, with a linear range of 1-7 μM and a limit of detection of 0.65 μM. By implementing a trained image processing convolutional neural network, the biosensor achieves a superior quantitative performance, with a detection range of 0-60 μM and an accuracy of 97.6% using a smartphone for image collection and analysis. This machine learning-based biosensor may be useful for rapid and quantitative assessment of contamination in field studies, such as water and juices.
