Control of Selectivity in Homogeneous Catalysis through Noncovalent Interactions

Kamran T. Mahmudov et al.

Summary: The regio-, site-, stereo- or chemoselective homogeneous catalytic transformations are crucial for the growth/success of the chemical industry. Noncovalent interactions have shown potential in controlling selectivity, reducing synthetic steps, and increasing the reactivity of catalyst. Inspired by enzymes, various types of synthetic metal complex and organocatalysts have been developed, where noncovalent interactions play a pivotal role in directing selectivity and improving efficiency. This article highlights recent examples of noncovalent interaction-based selectivity control in catalytic transformations of organic substrates.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanistic details of the cycloaddition reaction between CO2 and epoxide. The presence of ionic liquid in the reaction is found to significantly reduce the activation energy barriers, attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. The results suggest that ionic liquids can serve as efficient green solvents in similar catalytic reactions.

Metal-free, redox-neutral, and visible light-triggered coupling of CO2 with epoxides to cyclic carbonates at atmospheric pressure

Sandhya Saini et al.

Summary: We have successfully demonstrated a metal-free, redox-neutral, photocatalyzed method for the insertion of CO2 into epoxides to generate cyclic carbonates under visible light irradiation at atmospheric pressure. By utilizing 9,10-anthraquinone as a catalyst and n-tetra-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) as a co-catalyst, we achieved the coupling reaction of CO2 with epoxides to form cyclic carbonates at ambient temperature conditions. This methodology provides an effective and sustainable approach for the valorisation of CO2 to produce high value commodity chemicals and holds promise for future applications in CO2 utilization.

Fixation of CO2 into Cyclic Carbonates by Halogen-Bonding Catalysis

Rui Yan et al.

Summary: Halogen bonding, similar to hydrogen bonding, was introduced into the catalytic cycloaddition of carbon dioxide into epoxide reactions. A series of halogen-bond donor catalysts containing N-iodopyridinium halide were synthesized and evaluated, with 4-(dimethylamino)-N-iodopyridinium bromide identified as the optimal catalyst. The mechanism of halogen-bonding catalysis was proposed and demonstrated through successful CCE reactions.

Halogen bonding catalysis for the [3+2] cycloaddition reactions of epoxides with CO2, and other heterocumulenes

Kai Chen et al.

Summary: Halogen bonding catalysis was introduced into [3+2] cycloaddition reactions of epoxides with CO2, isocyanates, and CS2. By synthesizing a series of halogen bond donors and optimizing the catalyst, high conversions were achieved under specific conditions, transforming epoxides into five-membered heterocycles with high yields and selectivity. H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR titrations confirmed the coordination of the halogen bond donor with the substrate, suggesting a possible mechanism involving halogen bonding activation of epoxides and subsequent ring-opening reactions.
