Bacterial-Mediated Salinity Stress Tolerance in Maize (Zea mays L.): A Fortunate Way toward Sustainable Agriculture

Baber Ali et al.

Summary: The study found that Bacillus sp. PM31 has tolerance capacity and positive impacts on the growth, physiological, and molecular responses of maize under salinity stress. This bacterium can improve agro-morphological traits, chlorophyll content, antioxidant capacity, etc. Additionally, Bacillus sp. PM31 enhances salt tolerance by upregulating stress-related genes. These findings suggest that Bacillus sp. PM31 plays a crucial role in reducing salinity stress and can be an alternative approach to boost crop production and yield.

Ameliorative Effects of Exogenous Potassium Nitrate on Antioxidant Defense System and Mineral Nutrient Uptake in Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) under Salinity Stress

Amany H. A. Abeed et al.

Summary: Soil salinization is a significant issue caused by climate change and rising sea levels. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of potassium nitrate (KNO3) on two genotypes of Raphanus sativus L. under salt stress. The results showed that salinity stress significantly reduced various growth parameters and increased oxidative stress markers, but exogenous application of KNO3 alleviated these effects and improved the antioxidant potential system. The study provides important theoretical knowledge for understanding the physiological and biochemical mechanisms of salt tolerance in Raphanus sativus L. genotypes.

Efficacy of Naphthyl Acetic Acid Foliar Spray in Moderating Drought Effects on the Morphological and Physiological Traits of Maize Plants (Zea mays L.)

Sami Ullah et al.

Summary: The threat of climate change has increased the risk of worsening drought in many parts of Pakistan and the world. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of induced drought stress on the physiological mechanism of drought resistance in selected maize cultivars. The findings showed that induced drought stress led to a significant decrease in leaf water status, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, and an increase in sugar, proline, and antioxidant enzyme accumulation. The exogenous application of NAA alleviated the inhibitory effect of short-term water stress but had no effect on long-term osmotic stress.

Seed Priming Modulates Physiological and Agronomic Attributes of Maize (Zea mays L.) under Induced Polyethylene Glycol Osmotic Stress

Hussain Ahmad Kakar et al.

Summary: Drought and osmotic stresses pose major threats to agricultural crops, particularly during seed germination and seedling establishment. Seed priming techniques, such as osmo-priming with chitosan and hydro-priming with distilled water, have been found to improve the stress tolerance of Zea mays L. under PEG-induced osmotic stress. These priming techniques modulate the levels of photosynthetic pigments, proline, and antioxidant enzymes, enhancing the growth and physiological attributes of the plant.

Alleviating effects of salicylic acid spray on stage-based growth and antioxidative defense system in two drought-stressed rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars

Asma et al.

Summary: Approximately 33% of arable land globally is susceptible to drought, greatly impacting the yield and productivity of cereal crops. In this study, two rice genotypes, HTT-138 (drought tolerant) and HTT-39 (drought-sensitive), were evaluated under various water treatments. The results showed reduced leaf gas exchange parameters and water use efficiency under water deficient conditions, but these effects were mitigated by foliar spray of salicylic acid. Overall, salicylic acid application enhanced plant growth and yield in cereal crops, making it a useful tool for abiotic stress environments.
