Antifungal Sesquiterpenoids from Michelia formosana Leaf Essential Oil against Wood-Rotting Fungi

Chia-Che Wu et al.

Summary: The leaf essential oil of Michelia formosana exhibits antifungal activity against wood decay fungi. Four sesquiterpenoids, including guaiol, bulnesol, and beta-elemol, showed higher antifungal activity against brown-rot fungus Laetiporus sulphureus and white-rot fungus Lenzites betulina. The molecular structure of these sesquiterpenoids contains the hydroxyisopropyl group. The findings suggest that sesquiterpenoids from the leaf essential oil of M. formosana have the potential to be used as natural fungicides for decay control of lignocellulosic materials.

Antiparasitic and Antibacterial Functionality of Essential Oils: An Alternative Approach for Sustainable Aquaculture

Mahmoud A. O. Dawood et al.

Summary: The use of synthetic antibiotics and chemicals in aquaculture poses threats to sustainability due to the development of drug-resistant pathogens and residual antibiotic impacts. Herbal products and essential oils offer alternative approaches to combat microbial and parasitic diseases, with EOs showing effectiveness against fish parasites and pathogenic bacteria through mechanisms that need further research. This review explores the potential of EOs as an environmentally friendly phytotherapeutic in aquaculture, highlighting gaps in current research and suggesting future approaches for sustainable practice.

The Synergistic Effect of Three Essential Oils against Bacteria Responsible for the Development of Lithiasis Infection: An Optimization by the Mixture Design

Rabie Kachkoul et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition and synergistic effect of essential oils from Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Mentha pulegium, and Rosmarinus officinalis against Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus. Results show significant antibacterial efficacy, particularly with Mentha pulegium and Eucalyptus camaldulensis showing the best inhibition zones against the bacterial strains. The findings suggest the importance of these essential oils in treating urinary tract infections caused by resistant bacterial strains.

Antimicrobial combined action of Mentha pulegium, Ormenis mixta and Mentha piperita essential oils against S. aureus, E. coli and C. tropicalis: Application of mixture design methodology

Marwa Chraibi et al.

Summary: The study used experimental design methodology (mixture design) and microdilution assay to investigate interactions between active compounds from three Moroccan essential oils against S. aureus, E. coli, and C. tropicalis. The research found synergistic effects between M. piperita and M. pulegium essential oils and predicted optimal mixtures for combating bacterial and fungal infections. This suggests that essential oil combinations could be useful in addressing microbial drug resistance and as natural food preservatives.
