N2 injection to enhance coal seam gas drainage (N2-ECGD): Insights from underground field trial investigation

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducted exploratory tests of N-2-ECGD in underground low-gas coal seams, finding that continuous N-2 injection can promote the desorption of CH4 in the coal pores. Field trials showed an EPI of 0.45 MPa, with a significant increase in gas flow rate after N-2 injection, while the CH4 concentration decreased but the CH4 flow rate remained high.

Numerical Simulation and Optimization of Microwave Heating Effect on Coal Seam Permeability Enhancement

Ali Jebelli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the parameters affecting the distribution of electric and thermal fields in coal mining operations. It finds that the size of the resonance chamber is the most important parameter and that a moisture content of 5%, the highest input power, and a cutoff frequency close to the operating frequency result in the highest average temperature in the coal.

CO2 and CH4 adsorption on different rank coals: A thermodynamics study of surface potential, Gibbs free energy change and entropy loss

Xidong Du et al.

Summary: The pore structures of three different rank coals were characterized by CO2 and N2 adsorption. The adsorption thermodynamics of CO2 and CH4 on anthracite, bituminous coal and lignite were compared, showing that anthracite has the highest uptakes for both gases. Temperature and coal rank affect the preferential selectivity of CO2 over CH4. Omega, Delta G and Delta S of CO2 and CH4 exhibit a U-shaped function with coal maturity.

Micro-structural Damage to Coal Induced by Liquid CO2 Phase Change Fracturing

Zhiwei Liao et al.

Summary: The technology of liquid carbon dioxide phase change fracturing (LCPCF) was used to enhance the permeability of coal seams. LCPCF had mechanical damage effects on coal micro-structures to varying degrees. HP-MIP results showed that LCPCF mainly affected pores of > 100 nm within coal and resulted in the increase in the number of macro-pores and micro-fractures.

Review on Coal Bed Methane Recovery Theory and Technology: Recent Progress and Perspectives

Weiguo Liang et al.

Summary: Coal bed methane (CBM) is a primary clean energy source found in coal seams, but its recovery ratio is very low due to strong adsorption and low permeability. A theory of enhanced CBM recovery by energy stimulation, including SCCO2 fracturing and thermal fracturing, has been proposed. Experimental results show that SCCO2 has higher transportation capacity than gaseous CO2 in coal beds, and total permeability decreases as its content increases in the system with CH4.

Influences of hydraulic fracturing on microfractures of high-rank coal under different in-situ stress conditions

Pengwei Mou et al.

Summary: Hydraulic fracturing significantly increases the permeability of coal microfractures by expanding existing fractures rather than inducing new ones. The impact of hydraulic fracturing on microfractures is influenced by the heterogeneity of coal samples and differences in in-situ stress.

Gas desorption characteristics and related mechanism analysis under the action of superheated steam and pressurized water based on an experimental study

Xiaowei Li et al.

Summary: The research found that gas desorption capacity is significantly influenced by adsorption pressure, while particle size mainly affects gas release rate during desorption. Water injection inhibits gas desorption through four inhibition mechanisms, while superheated steam provides energy for desorption and increases gas desorption capacity and effective diffusion coefficient.

Investigation of enhancing coal permeability with high-temperature treatment

Jiang Liu et al.

Summary: Enhancing coal permeability through formation heat treatment is an effective method for coalbed methane exploitation. The process involves removing residual water and inducing cracks in the coal structure, significantly increasing permeability. Additionally, the stimulation mechanisms consist of alleviating aqueous phase trapping, weakening coal mechanical properties, and inducing coal fracture to produce more gas flow channels.
