Melanin Synthesis Inhibition Activity of Compounds Isolated from Bamboo Shoot Skin (Phyllostachys pubescens)

Ahmed Ashour et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the melanin synthesis inhibition activity of bamboo shoot skin as an agro-waste. The methanolic extract of bamboo peel extract showed good ability for melanin synthesis inhibition. Twelve compounds were isolated from the shoot skin and their structures were determined. Betulinic acid, tachioside, and 1,2-dilinolenin significantly suppressed melanin production per cell compared to control.

Amna A. Saddiq et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Calotropis procera, as well as the effects of its rhizospheric actinobacteria against pathogenic microorganisms. The extract of C. procera showed significant antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Escherichia coli. The isolated actinobacteria also exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and Candida albicans. Furthermore, C. procera extract demonstrated antigenotoxic effects against cyclophosphamide-induced genotoxicity.

Antagonist activities and phylogenetic relationships of actinomycetes isolated from an Artemisia habitat

Ana Cecilia Gonzalez-Franco et al.

Summary: In this study, actinomycetes cultured from the rhizosphere soils of the desert plant Artemisia tridentata and the nearby bulk soils were screened for their antimicrobial activities. The results showed that actinomycetes from the rhizosphere soil exhibited strong antagonistic activities against gram-positive bacteria and phytopathogenic fungi, while those from the bulk soil showed strong antagonistic activities against gram-negative bacteria. These findings highlight the rhizosphere soil of A. tridentata as a promising source for the discovery of potentially novel antifungal compounds.

Bioactive Potential of Several Actinobacteria Isolated from Microbiologically Barely Explored Desert Habitat, Saudi Arabia

Mohammed S. Almuhayawi et al.

Summary: Bioactive natural products, particularly from actinomycetes, have been explored for their potential therapeutic uses. This study focused on the phytochemical content and biological activities of actinobacteria isolates from Al-Jouf Desert, Saudi Arabia. These isolates showed promising antioxidant and anticancer activities, with some extracts inhibiting leukemia cell growth by reducing cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase activities. Further research on active molecules from these strains may lead to the development of new drugs against human diseases such as blood cancer.

Screening and activity assessing of phosphorus availability improving microorganisms associated with bamboo rhizosphere in subtropical China

Yijing Xing et al.

Summary: This study isolated and identified 52 PSMicro strains from five bamboo forests in subtropical China, showing significant variations in microbial diversity and phosphorus solubilization abilities among different forests. The results suggest that different microbial genera have varying capacities to solubilize phosphorus, which has implications for biotechnological application in alleviating phosphorus limitation in agricultural and natural systems.

Pentadecanoic acid against Candida albicans-Klebsiella pneumoniae biofilm: towards the development of an anti-biofilm coating to prevent polymicrobial infections

E. Galdiero et al.

Summary: The study explores the effectiveness of pentadecanal and pentadecanoic acid as anti-biofilm agents, especially in polymicrobial biofilms involving both fungi and bacteria. The results demonstrate that these molecules can prevent and disrupt the formation of dual-species biofilms, and the coating of pentadecanoic acid can prevent the formation of polymicrobial biofilms under dynamic conditions.

Phthalic Acid Esters: Natural Sources and Biological Activities

Ling Huang et al.

Summary: Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are a class of lipophilic chemicals widely used as plasticizers and additives to improve mechanical extensibility and flexibility of various products. They are not only widely detected in the environment but also found in plant and microbial sources, potentially being biosynthesized in nature. PAEs possess various biological activities and may influence the competitiveness of plants, algae, and microorganisms.

The Selective Antibacterial Activity of the Mixed Systems Containing Myristic Acid against Staphylococci

Minako Okukawa et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the antibacterial activity of different fatty acid mixed systems against Staphylococcus aureus, finding that additives can impact the selective antibacterial activity of the fatty acids. The myristic acid/palmitoleic acid mixed system enhanced the activity against S. aureus through an additive effect, while the myristic acid/lauric acid mixed system impaired the selectivity.
