Advances in extraction, purification, structural characteristics and biological activities of hemicelluloses: A review

Yanan Gao et al.

Summary: Hemicelluloses, a non-cellulosic heteropolysaccharide, are a major component of plant cell walls and the second most abundant renewable resource after cellulose. Despite its complex structure and variations among different plant species, hemicelluloses have remarkable biological activities that have been largely underutilised. Comprehensive investigations into the structural and biological properties of hemicelluloses can lead to rational utilisation and high-value conversion of this resource into agents with enhanced health benefits. This review summarises diverse research initiatives on hemicelluloses properties, including sources, extraction methods, structural characteristics, biological activities, and discusses future research directions.

Effects of solid acid and base catalysts on pyrolysis of rice straw and wheat straw biomass for hydrocarbon production

Yangyang Ma et al.

Summary: Surplus biomass is an attractive feedstock for the production of biofuels/chemicals due to its renewable and sustainable nature. However, its high oxygen content limits its use as a fuel. Therefore, the use of catalysts is necessary to improve the quality of bio-oil. This study investigated the catalytic fast pyrolysis of rice straw and wheat straw using basic and acidic catalysts at different reaction temperatures. The results showed that different compositions of feedstock reacted differently in the presence of different catalysts. The pyrolysis products were categorized into carbonyls, phenolics, heterocyclic compounds, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The presence of catalysts influenced the formation of different compounds, with basic metal oxide catalysts encouraging the formation of phenolics and ketones, and acidic catalysts encouraging the formation of aromatic hydrocarbons.

Integrated treatment of perennial ryegrass: Structural characterization of hemicelluloses and improvement of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose

Shao-Fei Sun et al.

Summary: By integrating ultrasonic and hydrothermal pretreatments with sequential alkali post extractions, hemicelluloses were successfully isolated and characterized from perennial ryegrass, leading to an improvement in the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of cellulose. The collaborative utilization of hemicelluloses and cellulose in ryegrass resulted in the effective removal of amorphous hemicelluloses and lignin, significantly increasing the cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis rate from 43.8 to 91.1%.
