Groundwater quality assessment in western Saudi Arabia using GIS and multivariate analysis

Fahad Alshehri et al.

Summary: Assessment of groundwater quality and potentially toxic elements is crucial for human health in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the suitability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation purposes and identified sources of contamination in Harrat Khaybar, Saudi Arabia. The results indicated that while the average values of some ions exceeded the permissible limit for drinking water, the average values of potentially toxic elements were within the permissible limit. The groundwater quality was affected by natural and anthropogenic factors, including ion exchange reactions, dissolution of minerals, and industrial and domestic effluents. Overall rating: 8 out of 10.

Contamination and health risk assessment of groundwater along the Red Sea coast, Northwest Saudi Arabia

Talal Alharbi et al.

Summary: Coastal groundwater is the main source of freshwater in coastal areas, and its hydrogeochemical characteristics and water quality were studied along the Saudi Red Sea coast. Groundwater was found to be slightly alkaline, with increasing total dissolved salts (TDS) concentrations towards the coastal plain. The dominant ions and heavy metals in the groundwater were identified, and the pollution levels were assessed using pollution indices. Nitrate and fluoride were found to pose health risks above the safety limit in both children and adults.

An integrated approach for the identification of potential shallow groundwater zones in west-central Saudi Arabia

Fahad Alshehri et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify groundwater resources at Harrat Khaybar using integrated electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and hydrogeological data. The results suggest that Harrat Khaybar consists of two significant waterbearing formations and the depth to groundwater varies across the area. The groundwater quality also shows spatial variations along the groundwater flow direction.

Hydrochemical characterization of geothermal and non-geothermal waters from Wadi Fatima, western Saudi Arabia

Fahad Alshehri et al.

Summary: The present study conducted in western Saudi Arabia aimed to identify the major hydrochemical differences between geothermal and non-geothermal groundwater samples. The results showed that geothermal samples had higher total dissolved solids (TDS), which can be attributed to higher circulation temperature leading to greater mineral dissolution, as well as the mixing of fresh, shallow groundwater with deeper saline water. Silicate weathering was found to be the primary hydrochemical process in the area.

Health risk assessment of nitrate and fluoride toxicity in groundwater contamination in the semi-arid area of Medchal, South India

Laxman Kumar Duvva et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the hydrogeochemical controlling variables for high groundwater contamination in a shallow hard rock aquifer in the semi-arid region of South India. It analyzes the major ion chemistry of groundwater samples and assesses water quality, spatial distribution, water-rock interaction, health risk, and principal component analysis. The study finds high concentrations of nitrate and fluoride in certain parts of the region. Statistical and factor analyses show that weathering of feldspar minerals and anthropogenic activities contribute to groundwater chemistry. Health risk assessment indicates non-cancerous health effects for both adults and children.

Assessment of human health risk and fluoride contamination in the arid coastal aquifer, Saudi Arabia

Natarajan Rajmohan

Summary: A systematic study was conducted to assess the health risks of human exposure to fluoride contamination in a coastal aquifer in Saudi Arabia. The study found that some groundwater exceeded the recommended fluoride level for drinking water and was unsuitable for consumption. The enrichment of fluoride in groundwater was primarily influenced by evaporation processes and mineral weathering. The results highlight the high level of groundwater contamination in the area, posing a threat to human health and necessitating proper treatment.

Impact of evaporation on groundwater salinity in the arid coastal aquifer, Western Saudi Arabia

Natarajan Rajmohan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of evaporation on groundwater salinity in the arid coastal aquifer in Al Lusub basin, Saudi Arabia using geochemical and statistical tools. Results showed that groundwater in the basin is brackish, with higher salinity in shallow wells compared to deeper ones. Through various analyses, it was confirmed that non-saline sources and processes, such as evaporation, reverse ion exchange, mineral dissolution, and wastewater infiltration, predominantly affected the water chemistry in this aquifer.

Hydrogeochemical evidence for fluoride behavior in groundwater and the associated risk to human health for a large irrigation plain in the Yellow River Basin

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: A hydrochemical analysis of groundwater in the Guanzhong Plain in China identified factors influencing fluoride concentrations in different regions. The study found that carbonate weathering was the main factor in low-fluoride groundwater, while evaporate dissolution and evaporation were key factors in high-fluoride zones. Different forces, such as irrigation-induced dilution and mineral adsorption, were responsible for fluoride behavior in high-fluoride groundwater zones, which had a distinct major ion chemistry. This research enhances our understanding of fluoride dynamics in groundwater and the impact of irrigation practices on fluoride concentrations.

Summary: The study conducted in the arid environment of the Rabigh basin in Western Saudi Arabia evaluated groundwater quality and associated health risks using various indices and parameters. The results showed that groundwater in the region is generally alkaline, hard, and unsuitable for drinking, but suitable for irrigation. Some samples were found to pose non-carcinogenic health risks to adults, children, and infants. The study recommended proper groundwater augmentation methods to reduce salinity and improve water quality in the shallow aquifer to ensure sustainable management.
