Patterns of Reforestation Successions on Abandoned Agricultural Lands of the Bashkir Cis-Urals

P. S. Shirokikh et al.

Summary: This study presents an analysis and forecast of restoration successions on abandoned agricultural lands in the Bashkir Cis-Urals. It is found that the consequences of different economic uses of arable land persist for a long time in the successional series, leading to high phytocoenotic diversity. Active reforestation results in strong shading, reducing species richness and floristic differences between fallow communities. The rate of succession and dynamics of the floristic composition are highest in the first 12-15 years after cessation of agricultural use.

Post-glacial vegetation and landscape change in upland Ireland with particular reference to Mam Ean, Connemara

Michael O'Connell

Summary: This study discusses the vegetation dynamics of mid-western Ireland during the Holocene, focusing on the Galway and Mayo uplands, upland blanket bog development, and the history of pine and yew. A detailed pollen profile from Mam Ean provides insight into environmental changes in upland Connemara, revealing the impacts of overgrazing and peat erosion. The C-14 dating of bog-pine sheds new light on pine and upland blanket bog development, showing that human activities have significantly altered the landscape in the last 1000 years.

Changes in the Distribution of Broadleaf Tree Species in the Central Part of the Southern Urals since the 1970s

N. Fedorov et al.

Summary: In the central part of the Southern Urals, changes in the distribution of broadleaf tree species including Tilia cordata Mill., Quercus robur L., Acer platanoides L., and Ulmus glabra Huds. have been analyzed after the extremely cold winters in the late 1970s. Abnormal winter temperatures had the greatest impact on the distribution of A. platanoides and U. glabra, with all broadleaf species currently expanding their range eastward.

SoilGrids 2.0: producing soil information for the globe with quantified spatial uncertainty

Laura Poggio et al.

Summary: SoilGrids generates global maps of soil properties using advanced technology and machine learning methods, incorporating soil observations and environmental factors to predict and analyze various soil properties worldwide. The research shows a good predictive performance for global soil properties, but also reveals the need for more soil observation data, especially in high-latitude regions.
