Effectiveness of targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome by using natural polyphenols: A systematic review of implications on health effects

Taotao Wang et al.

Summary: Globally, inflammation and metabolic disorders are significant public health concerns, and natural polyphenols have shown effectiveness in treating these conditions. The NLRP3 inflammasome, a complex within the cytosol, plays a crucial role in the innate immune system, but its aberrant activation is implicated in inflammatory processes and major metabolic diseases. Recent studies have demonstrated that natural polyphenols can inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation, providing potential therapeutic benefits for inflammation and metabolic disorders. This review summarizes the progress in understanding the mechanisms by which natural polyphenols target the NLRP3 inflammasome and explores their broader health effects.

Chemical profiling and biological activities of green extracts of willow species (Salix L., Salicaceae): Experimental and chemometric approaches

Emilia Gligoric et al.

Summary: Willow bark extract has been traditionally used for its analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. This study used microwave-assisted extraction to extract leaves and bark from six different species of willow with potential medicinal value. The extracts were analyzed for their chemical composition, antioxidant activity, and inhibitory potential against acetylcholinesterase. Chemometric analysis identified species and plant parts with the most favorable chemical profile, which could be further explored for their bioactive compounds.

Microwave-assisted aqueous two-phase extraction of phenolic compounds from Ribes nigrum L. and its antibacterial effect on foodborne pathogens

Meimei Zhao et al.

Summary: The study utilized microwave-assisted ammonium sulfate/ethanol aqueous two-phase system to extract phenolic compounds from blackcurrant fruits. After purification with AB-8 macroporous resin, the phenolics (RMAP) obtained had a purity of 80.50 ± 0.26%. The analysis confirmed that RMAP mainly consisted of kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, rutin, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) and hyperoside, with C3G showing the highest inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial mechanism of C3G against S. aureus involved inhibiting biofilm formation, disrupting cell structure, and inhibiting DNA Topo IV activity.
