Relay intercropping of maize with common dry beans to rationalize nitrogen fertilizer

Amira A. El-Mehy et al.

Summary: Maize and dry beans are important staple food and cash crops worldwide. The intercropping of maize and dry beans contributes to stable productivity and reduced environmental impacts for sustainable agriculture. This study investigates the effect of different sowing dates of maize and fertilizer levels on productivity and profitability. The results show that a short co-growth period of 30 days and a fertilizer level of 238.0 kg N/ha significantly increase the total yield of maize and dry beans, and have economic advantages.

Farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions for the adoption of in-field rainwater harvesting (IRWH) technique in Thaba Nchu, South Africa

Admire Rukudzo Dzvene et al.

Summary: The study found that while most farmers have a positive attitude towards in-field rainwater harvesting (IRWH) technique, only a minority of them made an informed choice. Factors such as age, education level, and type of household farm have significant impacts on the adoption of the technology. Lack of training and technology taking up land are identified as barriers to farmers' adoption of the technique.

Different wheat intercropping systems with tomato to alleviate chilling stress, increase yield and profitability

Ahmed M. Sheha et al.

Summary: Chilling temperature stress is the biggest factor affecting tomato performance. Intercropping wheat with tomato in mid-November at a 50% seeding rate can provide the highest fruit setting percentage, yield components, and total fruit yield per hectare. November 15th is the most favorable sowing date for wheat, resulting in increased grain and straw yield per hectare. Intercropping wheat with tomato at a 50% seeding rate on November 15th also leads to higher land equivalent ratio, area time equivalent ratio, and net return compared to sole tomato cultivation.

Response of maize and common bean to spatial and temporal differentiation in maize-common bean intercropping

Yayeh Bitew et al.

Summary: Based on a maize-common bean intercropping experiment conducted in North western Ethiopia, it was found that spatial arrangement and planting date significantly affect the agronomic attributes of common bean. In Adet, planting common bean simultaneously with maize in a paired arrangement resulted in higher grain yield and land use efficiency, while in Finoteselam, intercropping common bean with maize at maize emergence in a paired arrangement showed the highest land use efficiency and profitability. Further research on the compatibility of different maize and common bean varieties in various spatial and temporal differentiations is recommended.

Productivity of Newly Released Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Varieties Under Sole Cropping and Intercropping With Maize (Zea mays L.)

Wilson Nkhata et al.

Summary: Intercropping maize with the newly released common bean variety SER83 showed significantly higher yields compared to sole cropping in the study areas, indicating a potential for stable and sustainable production in similar agro-ecologies. This suggests the benefit of maize and common bean intercropping in terms of land equivalent ratios, highlighting the importance of this practice for resource-efficient farming.

Response of maize and common bean to spatial and temporal differentiation in maize-common bean intercropping

Yayeh Bitew et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of spatial and temporal differentiation on agronomic attributes of common beans in maize-common bean intercropping system. It was found that planting common beans simultaneously with maize in paired planting pattern at Adet and planting common beans at maize emergence at Finoteselam resulted in maximum land use efficiency and profitability without compromising the main crop yield. Additionally, further research on the compatibility of different maize and common bean varieties in various spatial and temporal differentiations was recommended.
