The Leaf Essential Oil of Gynoxys buxifolia (Kunth) Cass. (Asteraceae): A Good Source of Furanoeremophilane and Bakkenolide A

Carolina Cumbicus et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the composition of a new essential oil extracted from Gynoxys buxifolia (Kunth) Cass. The oil was found to contain 72 compounds, with furanoeremophilane and bakkenolide A being the major constituents. The study also analyzed the dissolved organic phase of the hydrolate, with p-vinylguaiacol being the main component. Additionally, the enantioselective analysis of chiral terpenes revealed both enantiomerically pure compounds and an enantiomeric excess of 69.2% for S-(-)-sabinene.

A New Essential Oil from the Leaves of Gynoxys rugulosa Muschl. (Asteraceae) Growing in Southern Ecuador: Chemical and Enantioselective Analyses

Yessenia E. E. Maldonado et al.

Summary: This study describes the first-ever report of an essential oil obtained by distilling the leaves of the Andean species Gynoxys rugulosa Muschl. The chemical composition of the essential oil was determined qualitatively and quantitatively using GC-MS and GC-FID. A total of 112 compounds were identified and quantified, accounting for 87.3-93.0% of the total oil mass. The main constituents were alpha-pinene, (E)-beta-caryophyllene, alpha-humulene, germacrene D, delta-cadinene, caryophyllene oxide, alpha-cadinol, 1-nonadecanol, 1-eicosanol, n-tricosane, 1-heneicosanol, n-pentacosane, 1-tricosanol, and n-heptacosane. Enantioselective analysis of the essential oil revealed the presence of enantiomers for several compounds.

α-Pinene: A never-ending story

Martina Allenspach et al.

Summary: Alpha-pinene, a monoterpene found in higher plants, has been historically used for treating respiratory tract infections and is essential in the fragrance and flavor industry. Recent research focuses on synthesizing new compounds with pharmacological and herbicidal activities based on the alpha-pinene core, as well as investigating the enantioselective activities of alpha-pinene. Furthermore, approaches for authenticity control of essential oils based on their enantiomeric profile are also discussed.

Essential Oil and Major Non-Volatile Secondary Metabolites from the Leaves of Amazonian Piper subscutatum

Jorge Ramirez et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the essential oil and major non-volatile secondary metabolites from the leaves of Piper subscutatum collected in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The essential oil contained compounds like (E)-beta-caryophyllene and beta-chamigrene, while the non-volatile fraction consisted of lignans. Enantioselective analysis showed different enantiomeric combinations in the oil.
