Bacterial degradation of mixed-PAHs and expression of PAH-catabolic genes

Santosh Kumar Sakshi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the degradation of a mixture of PAHs by two bacterial strains, Kocuria flava and Rhodococcus pyridinivorans. It was found that both strains effectively degraded the PAHs and showed significant expression of catabolic genes during the degradation process.

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by bacterial mixture

M. Xu et al.

Summary: The study identified naturally occurring bacteria capable of degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and demonstrated that a bacterial mixture could enhance the degradation rate of PAHs. Through the cooperation of enzymes, the main metabolite detected was dibutyl phthalate, indicating the phthalic acid pathway as the main route of PAHs degradation.

Mangrove restoration promotes the anti-scouribility of the sediments by modifying inherent microbial community and extracellular polymeric substance

Zhimao Mai et al.

Summary: This study found that mangrove restoration significantly enhances sediment anti-scouribility and promotes EPS content in sediments, with extracellular protein and polysaccharide positively correlated with anti-scouribility. The increased bacterial abundances in sediments after mangrove restoration, especially Kandelia obovata, suggest Proteobacteria and Bacteroides may play important roles in EPS secretion and anti-scouribility promotion. Additionally, the increase in total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus induced by mangrove restoration may contribute to the improvement of sediment anti-scouribility.

Microbial Bioremediation Techniques for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAHs)-a Review

Nor Asyikin Ismail et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge about polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminants in the environment and emphasizes the importance of using benzo(a)pyrene in this research. It highlights the removal methods for PAHs and their limitations in bioremediation, while thoroughly explaining the factors that influence remediation, with a focus on using bioremediation to remove PAHs. The use of bacteria and fungi as potential degraders of PAHs pollutants has emerged and is extensively studied to determine the optimal removal conditions. The degradation pathways of PAHs are also discussed to provide insights into microbial bioremediation for reducing PAHs.

The catabolic pathways of in situ rhizosphere PAH degraders and the main factors driving PAH rhizoremediation in oil-contaminated soil

Jibing Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that different prairie grasses significantly increased phenanthrene removal and altered the diversity of phenanthrene degraders, explaining their unique rhizoremediation mechanisms. Additionally, propanoate and inositol phosphate were identified as the dominant factors that drove PAH rhizoremediation by strengthening ecological networks of soil microbial communities.

Remediation of soils and sediments polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: To immobilize, mobilize, or degrade?

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: PAHs are generated due to incomplete burning of organic substances, primarily influenced by the use of fossil fuels. They impose health impacts on humans and other living organisms due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic properties. Their high hydrophobicity and low water solubility influence their adsorption onto soils and sediments, affecting their bioavailability and subsequent degradation.
