Fibular diaphyseal curvature of the Jomon population

Yasuo Hagihara

Summary: This study examined the differences in fibular diaphyseal curvature between prehistoric Jomon hunter-gatherers and modern Japanese individuals. The results showed significant differences in anteroposterior curvature, with Jomon individuals having a significantly curved anterior direction compared to modern Japanese individuals. In contrast, there was little difference in mediolateral curvature. The study also found a weak correlation between fibular curvature and body size variables.

Environment and climate during the Neanderthal-AMH presence in the Garraf Massif mountain range (northeastern Iberia) from the late Middle Pleistocene to Late Pleistocene inferred from small-vertebrate assemblages

Juan Manuel Lopez-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study explores the environmental and climatic changes in the Garraf Massif during the late Middle Pleistocene to Late Pleistocene. The analysis of small-vertebrate assemblages from Paleolithic sites reveals varying landscapes and climates. The results suggest that human presence in the analyzed sites coincided with woodland formations in mild climatic conditions, consistent with findings from other Mediterranean regions.

Variability and the form-function framework in evolutionary biomechanics and human locomotion

Alison A. Murray

Summary: The form-function conceptual framework is crucial for understanding morphological variation and locomotion in various disciplines. However, the complexities of fossil hominins, apes, and humans pose challenges to traditional biomechanical or mathematical models. This Special Collection of nine papers aims to address these challenges and provide tools to better understand the complexity linking structure and function.

Forest terrains influence walking kinematics among indigenous Tsimane of the Bolivian Amazon

Nicholas B. Holowka et al.

Summary: One major advantage of bipedalism is reducing energy expenditure during walking. However, there have been few studies on the kinematics of walking on natural terrains. This study used high-speed video to record the walking kinematics of individuals from a tribal community in the Bolivian Amazon on different terrains. The results showed that irregular natural surfaces, such as forests, cause humans to alter their walking kinematics, potentially leading to higher energy expenditure than predicted by laboratory-based data.

Cultural variation in running techniques among non-industrial societies

Ian J. Wallace et al.

Summary: Research suggests that body kinematics during running vary between groups in non-industrial societies based on the cultural importance of running. This study explores the elements of good running technique and presents evidence of cultural attitudes influencing running techniques. It finds that the Tsimane forager-horticulturalists in Bolivia, who do not consider running culturally important, tend to use suboptimal technique when running.

Sensitivity of musculoskeletal models to variation in muscle architecture parameters

Patricia Ann Kramer et al.

Summary: Musculoskeletal models rely on assumptions and data, including kinematic data, kinetic data, and muscle parameters. Previous studies have shown that different muscle parameters can lead to variations in muscle and joint reaction forces during walking.

Evolutionary biomechanics: hard tissues and soft evidence?

Sarah Broyde et al.

Summary: Biomechanical modelling is a useful tool for studying the evolution of functional performance in extinct animals, but reconstructions of soft tissue properties in current models face challenges. The qualitative and quantitative differences in reconstructions have a significant impact on predicting evolutionary patterns in macroevolutionary studies.

Variation, mosaicism and degeneracy in the hominin foot

J. McClymont et al.

Summary: The fossil record is naturally scarce and incomplete, with soft tissue and important bony details being devoured over time, leading to an unstable classification of fossil taxa. Extensive work in biology, movement sciences, and neurobiology suggests that the unavoidable variation in the fossil record can be described more rigorously.

A review of musculoskeletal modelling of human locomotion

Adam D. Sylvester et al.

Summary: The importance of locomotion in accessing key resources is highlighted in the text, with a focus on understanding internal forces and combining experimental data with virtual models. The methodological approach combines knowledge from biological anthropology and mechanical engineering, requiring accurate input data for producing effective models.
