Cannabis use is associated with low plasma endocannabinoid Anandamide in individuals with psychosis

Anahita Bassir Nia et al.

Summary: In this study, the association between cannabis use and the endocannabinoid system was investigated in individuals with psychosis. The results showed that cannabis use was associated with lower plasma levels of AEA in individuals with psychosis, which is consistent with previous findings in healthy individuals. Further research is needed to explore the clinical significance of this finding.

Summary: Attenuating enzymatic degradation of endocannabinoids by fatty acid amide hydrolase reduces cannabis withdrawal symptoms, while the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib did not significantly improve withdrawal symptoms in a human laboratory model of cannabis use disorder, and even increased cannabis craving.

Consensus paper of the WFSBP task force on cannabis, cannabinoids and psychosis

Deepak Cyril D'Souza et al.

Summary: The liberalisation of cannabis laws and the availability of potent cannabis have raised concerns about the risk of psychosis. Research indicates that exposure to cannabis increases the risk of various psychotic conditions, with higher doses and earlier age of exposure posing greater risk. However, cannabis is not the sole cause of psychosis and is likely one of many contributing factors. In individuals with established psychosis, cannabis has a detrimental impact on the illness. Modifying exposure to cannabis and cannabinoids could potentially affect the rates of cannabis-related psychosis, particularly in high-risk individuals.

The Relationship Between Circulating Endogenous Cannabinoids and the Effects of Smoked Cannabis

Tonisha Kearney-Ramos et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of acute smoked cannabis administration on circulating endocannabinoids (eCBs) and the relationship between cannabis effects and eCBs. The results showed that cannabis administration increased intoxication ratings, heart rate, and plasma THC levels. The study also found a significant positive correlation between baseline AEA levels and peak ratings of high and good drug effect, and a negative correlation between baseline 2-AG levels and frequency of cannabis use.

Summary: Cannabis use disorder affects approximately 10% of global cannabis users, and while there are treatment methods available, enduring abstinence is not common. Legalization of non-medical cannabis use may increase the prevalence of CUD.

Fear extinction learning and anandamide: an fMRI study in healthy humans

Jennifer Spohrs et al.

Summary: Anxiety- and trauma-related disorders are severe illnesses with high prevalence, and the endocannabinoid system (ECS) has become a focus in psychopharmacological research. Studies show anxiolytic effects of endocannabinoids in rodent models, but research in humans remains scarce. Through research on healthy males, it was found that AC-heterozygotes of the SNP rs324420 have higher AEA levels, potentially related to fear extinction learning.
