Studying the effect of self-selected background music on reading task with eye movements

Ying Que et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of self-selected background music on reading tasks for learners with different characteristics. Results showed no significant differences in passage comprehension accuracy or metacognition between groups. Fine-grained eye movement measures revealed that background music imposed heavier cognitive load on post-lexical processes. Students with higher English proficiency or frequent background music usage experienced less cognitive load, while those with higher working memory capacity invested more mental effort in the background music condition. These findings contribute to the scientific understanding of how background music interacts with cognitive tasks and provide practical guidance for learners and learning environment designers.

The Neuroscience of Dance: A Conceptual Framework and Systematic Review

Olivia Foster Vander Elst et al.

Summary: In this article, a conceptual framework and systematic review are provided for researching the neuroscience of dance. Future research directions include the interactive and collective aspects of dance, dance performance, observation, and therapy. Dance and music engage overlapping brain networks and have similar processing mechanisms in perception, action, and emotion. The neuroscience of dance is an exciting field that can provide insights into the links between psychological processes, behavior, human flourishing, and eudaimonia.

Contextual Factors Affecting Risky Decision Making: The Influence of Music on Task Performance and Perceived Distraction

Melissa T. Buelow et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of music on decision making and other executive functions. It was found that rock music was more distracting than classical music when passively listening, but there were no differences when actively listening. Despite the self-reported increased distraction, there were no significant differences in task performance.

Multisensory integration in cortical regions responding to locomotion-related visual and somatomotor signals

Sara Di Marco et al.

Summary: This study used fMRI to investigate the integration of egomotion-related visual signals with somatomotor inputs from leg movements during heading changes. The results showed that certain regions were sensitive to congruent or incongruent stimuli, suggesting their involvement in multisensory integration processes for guiding or adjusting leg movements.
