Magnetite-mediated electrically connected community for shortening startup of methane-dependent denitrification in a membrane biofilm reactor

Lianfu Liang et al.

Summary: The presence of magnetite can enhance nitrate removal rate, shorten the startup period of DAMO reactor, and promote the formation of an electrically connected microbial community. The microbial community in the presence of magnetite is enriched with potential DAMO bacteria, methanogens, and nitrate-reducing bacteria, which may participate in direct interspecies electron transfer via magnetite as the electrical connection component.

Glycol/glycerol-fed electrically conductive aggregates suggest a mechanism of stimulating direct interspecies electron transfer in methanogenic digesters

Yuan Li et al.

Summary: The possibility of stimulating direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) using alcohol compounds as substrates was investigated. Electrically conductive aggregates were observed, with filament-based networks connecting different species. Genes for e-pili and c-type cytochromes were highly expressed. Methanothrix species were dominant and actively involved in DIET. Alcohol dehydrogenase and NADH-quinone oxidoreductase genes were more highly expressed in glycol and glycerol-fed aggregates. This study suggests that alcohol compounds with more hydroxy groups can enhance DIET.

Magnetite as a means to enhance anaerobic digestion of furfural

Dong Feng et al.

Summary: The addition of magnetite has been found to enhance the anaerobic digestion of furfural and increase methane production. This is due to the formation of electroactive aggregates and the establishment of a direct interspecies electron transfer pathway between Sedimentibacter and Methanosaeta. The energy production efficiency in the presence of 10 g/l magnetite is 2.3 times higher than the control.

Anaerobic oxidation has a minor effect on mitigating seafloor methane emissions from gas hydrate dissociation

Christian Stranne et al.

Summary: Continental margin sediments contain large amounts of methane stored as gas hydrate. Ocean warming may release substantial amounts of methane, and the process of anaerobic oxidation of methane is often neglected in current projections. A study using a coupled model suggests that for high seafloor warming rates, the efficiency of anaerobic oxidation of methane is low, and it has a minimal mitigating effect on seafloor methane emissions.

Long-Term Succession Shows Interspecies Competition of Geobacter in Exoelectrogenic Biofilms

Xuejun Yan et al.

Summary: The study observed a succession between two closely related Geobacter species in MFC biofilms, with G. spp. predominant near the electrode and aerobes abundant in the outer layer. Removing the outer aerobes led to a transition from G. sulfurreducens to G. anodireducens. The competition between the two species was influenced by cell size, extracellular polymeric substances, and cell numbers.

Enhancement of nitrite reduction and enrichment of Methylomonas via conductive materials in a nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation system

Jiali Chang et al.

Summary: Stimulating the nitrite reduction rate in n-damo process can be achieved by introducing conductive nano-magnetite and/or electron shuttle AQDS, while insulated ferrihydrite has a negative effect. Methylomonas spp. were enriched under n-damo conditions with the supplementation of nano-magnetite and/or AQDS, indicating potential survival and growth mechanisms under anaerobic conditions. Further research is needed to verify these hypotheses.

Enhancement of nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation via Geobacter sulfurreducens

Jiali Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the stimulation of nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane-oxidation (n-damo) activity by Geobacter sulfurreducens and the enhancement effect by adding nano-magnetite or hydroxylapatite. Results showed an increase in nitrite reduction activity and n-damo bacterial abundance in treatments with G. sulfurreducens. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed the enrichment of uncultured phylum WPS-2 in these treatments, corroborating the microbial interspecies electron transfer potentiality of the n-damo enrichment.
