Insight into kinetic and Thermodynamic Analysis methods for lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis

Zhiyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigates the applicability and accuracy of kinetic and thermodynamic methods in biomass pyrolysis processes. The Friedman method provides accurate activation energies, while the KAS and FWO isoconversional methods lead to systematic errors. The conventional method for determining thermodynamic parameters is based on the conversion rate peak temperature, which has no theoretical basis.

Thermodegradation characterization of microplastics: Dispersion effect and pyrolysis kinetics by artificial intelligence

Wei-Hsin Chen et al.

Summary: The detailed combustion behavior and pyrolysis kinetics of microplastics are still absent in the current research. Adding silica to HDPE microplastics can effectively avoid their agglomeration during pyrolysis. The results suggest that less than 20% of PE in the mixture can retain microplastic pyrolysis characteristics.

Brewer?s spent grain pyrolysis kinetics and evolved gas analysis for the sustainable phenolic compounds and fatty acids recovery potential

S. Sobek et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study on the thermochemical conversion of spent grain from a local brewery for the recovery of phenolic compounds and fatty acids. The pyrolysis process was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis and a kinetic modeling based on a 3-stage mechanism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to evaluate and identify the released volatiles. The results showed a high content of fatty acids, phenolic compounds, and nitrogen compounds.

Effect of slow pyrolysis conditions on biocarbon yield and properties: Characterization of the volatiles

B. Babinszki et al.

Summary: Slow pyrolysis of spruce and birch was conducted under different heating programs and conditions in a quartz tube reactor heated by an electric furnace. The study found that spruce produced more char yield than birch, and the main gaseous products showed similar evolution profiles. The relative amount of aromatic and polyaromatic compounds in volatile matter decreased significantly with increasing carbonization temperature.

Kinetics of pyrolysis of cotton stalk using model-fitting and model-free methods

Ramesh Naidu Mandapati et al.

Summary: The study investigated the pyrolysis of cotton stalk to determine its intrinsic kinetic parameters and understand the pyrolysis process. Model-fitting and model-free methods were used to assess the kinetics, revealing that simple reaction models were insufficient to explain the pyrolysis mechanism. Further investigation with complex reaction mechanisms and different methods yielded average activation energy values for fractional conversion values of 0.05 > alpha > 0.7.

Pyrolysis of sewage sludge for sustainable biofuels and value-added biochar production

Praveen Kumar Ghodke et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the pyrolysis of sewage sludge to produce eco-friendly fuels and value-added biochar products. The experiments showed that at the optimal temperature of 500 degrees C, the product yield consisted of 22.4 wt% bio-oil, 18.9 wt% pyrolysis gases, and 58.7 wt% biochar. The chemical composition and fuel qualities of bio-oil and pyrolysis gases make them suitable for engine use. Additionally, the biochar analysis demonstrated its potential as organic manure in the agriculture sector.
