Fibrinogen mediates cadmium-induced macrophage activation and serves as a predictor of cadmium exposure in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Summary: The etiologies of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remain unclear. Cadmium (Cd) exposure and increased fibrinogen levels in lung tissue are associated with COPD and cigarette smoking. Fibrinogen enhances Cd-induced macrophage activation and plays a role in collagen synthesis and cytokine/chemokine production. Fibrinogen levels in patients with COPD may serve as a marker of Cd exposure and predict disease progression.
