Heterogeneous interfacial photocatalysis for the inactivation of Karenia mikimotoi by Bi2O3 loaded onto a copper metal organic framework (Bi2O3@Cu-MOF) under visible light

Mengjiao Wang et al.

Summary: Numerous studies indicate that the toxic red tide algae Karenia mikimotoi (K. mikimotoi) is the main concern in the ocean, and photocatalytic technology is increasingly recognized as an effective method to eliminate harmful algae. In this study, a Bi2O3@copper metal organic framework (Cu-MOF) was prepared and demonstrated effective inactivation of K. mikimotoi under visible light. The Bi2O3@Cu-MOF exhibited enhanced visible light absorption due to the reduced band gap, and it showed high photocatalytic activity with a 96.35% inactivation rate of K. mikimotoi after 4 hours of visible light irradiation. The MOF-coupled photocatalysts have significant potential for treating harmful algae.

Transcriptomic analysis dissects the regulatory strategy of toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa under differential nitrogen forms

Xiaolong Yang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the physiological and transcriptomic changes of Microcystis aeruginosa supplied with different nitrogen forms (nitrate and ammonium). The results show that ammonium stimulates initial growth better than nitrate, but excess absorbed light energy under high ammonium leads to cellular damage. Adequate nitrate supply promotes efficient photosynthesis and higher biomass yield. The different nitrogen forms also induce different transcriptomic patterns in M. aeruginosa. These findings provide important clues for understanding the effects of nitrogen forms on cyanobacterial outbreaks.

Cyanopeptides restriction and degradation co-mediate microbiota assembly during a freshwater cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (CyanoHAB)

Han Gao et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are intensifying globally and are affected by climate change and eutrophication. This study investigates the role of cyanopeptides, bioactive secondary metabolites of cyanobacteria, in microbiota assembly and ecosystem function. The study finds that cyanopeptides, particularly those beyond microcystins, negatively impact microbiota diversity and exert potential collective eco-toxicities. In addition, cyanopeptides have a stronger influence on microbial communities than nutrients during CyanoHABs. Cyanopeptide restriction and degradation are identified as the deterministic drivers of community assembly.

Response of Microcystis aeruginosa and Microcystin-LR to electron beam irradiation doses

Alexandra M. Folcik et al.

Summary: Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (cyanoHABs) are a threat to human and animal health due to the production of cyanotoxins. Microcystis aeruginosa, a common cyanobacterium, produces the toxin MC-LR. High energy electron beam (eBeam) irradiation can effectively kill M. aeruginosa cells and degrade MC-LR, but there may be a delay in cell lysis post-irradiation. The results suggest that eBeam technology may be suitable for mitigating cyanoHABs in water treatment following cell lysis.
