Experimental study on swelling pressure of low dry density compacted bentonites during saturation combining X-ray diffraction

Kunlin Ruan et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-ring and a newly developed swelling pressure apparatus were used to measure the swelling pressure of three low dry density bentonites. X-ray diffraction was employed to observe slices from the multi-ring and obtain basal spacings, and the distance between particles was calculated using a basal spacing database. The relationship between microstructural changes (including basal spacing and distance between particles) and swelling pressure was discussed. Results showed that calcium-type bentonites had higher swelling pressure than sodium-type bentonites during saturation. When bentonites had the same cation type, those with lower montmorillonite content had smaller swelling pressures. Basal spacing increased significantly at the beginning and then remained stable during saturation. All three bentonites gradually reached the 3 w state with wetting. The distance between particles increased with saturation time. Swelling pressure generally increased with increasing basal spacing and distance between particles during saturation. The mechanism of swelling pressure development was also discussed.

Impacts of different matrix components on multi-scale pore structure and reservoir capacity: Insights from the Jurassic Da'anzhai member in the Yuanba area, Sichuan Basin

Daiqin Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pore structure characteristics of Da'anzhai shale using various measurement techniques and discusses the impact of different matrix components on the pore structure and reservoir capacity. The results show that the pore system of Da'anzhai shale is composed of mineral-associated pores, organic matter pores, and microfractures. Clay-mineral pores dominate, followed by organic matter pores. The controlling factors of the pore structure are TOC, organic macerals, and clay minerals. This study provides a better understanding of the pore formation mechanism of shale reservoirs, which is significant for gas-bearing evaluations.

Effects of deep alkaline and acidic fluids on reservoir developed in fault belt of saline lacustrine basin

Lei-Lei Yang et al.

Summary: Through a 2D model based on a typical sub-salt to intra-salt vertical profile in the Qaidam Basin, China, this study analyzes the flow and migration of fluids in the reservoirs and the resulting mineral dissolution, precipitation, and transformation. The study reveals that deep fluids migrate along dominant channels, trigger fluid-rock chemical reactions, and affect reservoir development. The transformative effects of deep alkaline and acidic fluids on the reservoir and the important role of faults in fluid transport and reservoir development were determined.

Study of the Effect of Mineral Components on the Permeability Impairment Rate and Stress Sensitivity Factor of Shale

Shuang Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the mineralogical composition of shale cores from a well in northern Guizhou and investigated the impact of mineral components on the permeability impairment rate and stress sensitivity coefficient of shale reservoirs. The results showed that clay mineral content and effective stress were negatively correlated with permeability and porosity, while detrital mineral content was positively correlated. Quartz content and modulus of elasticity were negatively correlated with permeability impairment rate and stress sensitivity factor, while clay mineral content was positively correlated. Shale with higher brittle mineral content was more likely to undergo brittle damage and exhibited lower stress sensitivity factor.

Diagenesis and Its Impact on the Reservoir Quality of Continental Shales: A Case Study of the Lower Jurassic Da'anzhai Member of the Ziliujing Formation in the Sichuan Basin, China

Yixiu Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper describes the characteristics of lacustrine fine-grained rock reservoir in the Da'anzhai Member of the Ziliujing Formation in the Sichuan Basin, and discusses the impact of diagenesis on the reservoir quality. The study identifies compaction and cementation as the main factors controlling the physical properties of shale and limestone, and the difference between dissolution and cementation as the main control factor for the formation of different reservoir types.

Pore Structure Characteristics and Permeability Stress Sensitivity of Jurassic Continental Shale of Dongyuemiao Member of Ziliujing Formation, Fuxing Area, Eastern Sichuan Basin

Rongyan Yang et al.

Summary: The porosity and permeability of continental shale are influenced by overburden pressure, as well as the content of clay minerals and carbonate minerals. The stress sensitivity of shale permeability is stronger with higher clay mineral and total organic carbon content, while it is weaker with higher carbonate mineral content. Matrix pores and micro-fractures contribute to the strong stress sensitivity of shale permeability in the study area.

Simulation experiment of fluid-feldspar sandstone interactions and their implications for tight oil and gas exploration of the Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, China

Zhongliang Ma et al.

Summary: This study reveals the impact of total component fluids from source rock on reservoir transformation during hydrocarbon evolution through simulation experiments. Under closed conditions, the interaction between fluids and feldspar sandstone leads to the alteration of feldspar minerals and the generation of clay minerals, resulting in reservoir tightness. Additionally, a semi-quantitative evaluation method for feldspar dissolution and porosity was established. The geological characteristics of the Yanchang Formation of the Ordos Basin affect the retention effect of diagenetic fluids, and oil and gas exploration should focus on finding sedimentary sand facies bodies favorable for the preservation of primary pores.

Unconventional Petroleum Sedimentology: A Key to Understanding Unconventional Hydrocarbon Accumulation

Caineng Zou et al.

Summary: The commercial exploitation of unconventional petroleum resources has significantly transformed the global energy structure. Sweet-spot intervals, consisting of deposits with high organic matter content or closely associated sandstones/carbonate rocks, are the most productive unconventional hydrocarbon resources. The formation of sweet-spot intervals is controlled by depositional and diagenetic settings influenced by global or regional geological events. Understanding the formation and distribution of sweet-spot intervals is crucial for unconventional petroleum systems.

Summary: Fracture effectiveness plays a crucial role in shale oil exploration. This study evaluated the fracture effectiveness in the Cretaceous Qing-1 Member shale oil reservoir in Gulong Sag, China, and identified structural fractures as the most significant factor. Structural inversion, abnormal high pressure, and dissolution were found to have the least impact on fracture effectiveness.

Formation, preservation and connectivity control of organic pores in shale

Tenger Borjigin et al.

Summary: Organic pore development is controlled by the type, maturity, and decomposition of organic matter, while the preservation of organic pores is influenced by maturity and diagenesis. The connectivity of pores depends on the abundance and distribution of organic matter. Different types of shale have varying characteristics in the formation and connection of organic pores, grain margin fractures, and bedding fractures.
