Nonlinear Phenomena in Microfluidics

Sarah Battat et al.

Summary: This review focuses on experimental work on nonlinear phenomena in microfluidics, including oscillations, flow-switching behaviors, and bifurcations. The nonlinear behaviors can be induced by the geometry of channels and the manipulation of elements by flowing fluids. Additionally, intermediate Reynolds numbers, non-Newtonian fluids, and liquid metals also contribute to the nonlinear effects. Practical applications include flow gating, mixing, and particle separations.

Batch versus microfluidic emulsification processes to produce whey protein microgel beads from thermal or acidic gelation

Alban Lacroix et al.

Summary: This study aims to produce homogenous and spherical whey protein microgels with adjustable diameters using two elaboration processes. It is found that emulsification controls the size polydispersity of the microgels, while gelation process influences their structure and assembly. Acid gelation in the microfluidic setup results in spherical, homogeneous microgels with controllable properties.

Microfluidic approach to produce emulsion-filled alginate microgels

Aureliano Agostinho Dias Meirelles et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of glass microfluidic devices to produce emulsion-filled alginate microgels and investigated the effect of process variables on microgels size and polydispersity. Monodisperse particle size distribution of the microgels was observed, with size influenced by the viscosity of the O/W emulsion and the phases flow rates. These results demonstrate the potential of microfluidic processes for encapsulating lipophilic compounds in microgels.
