Measurement of nitrogen content in rice plant using near infrared spectroscopy combined with different PLS algorithms

XueXue Miao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to rapidly analyze the nitrogen content in rice plants. A predictive model was established using spectral data from 447 rice samples at various growth stages. Different spectral preprocessing methods and characteristic selection methods were compared, and the synergy interval partial least-squares (SiPLS) method showed the best performance. The results demonstrate that NIR spectroscopy combined with the SiPLS algorithm can be used to quickly determine nitrogen content in rice plants.

Dietary Fibre Impacts the Texture of Cooked Whole Grain Rice

Siriluck Wattanavanitchakorn et al.

Summary: Consumers generally prefer white rice over whole grain rice due to its hardness and low palatability. However, consuming a large amount of white rice, leading a sedentary lifestyle, and acquiring type 2 diabetes are strongly linked. To address this, a new breeding goal was formulated to improve the softness and palatability of whole grain rice while promoting its nutritional value. The study found that the ratio of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) to insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) influenced the textural properties of cooked whole grain rice, and this ratio could be used as a biomarker for breeding soft and highly palatable whole grain rice.

Lactoferrin concentration in bovine milk: validation of radial immunodiffusion technique, sources of variation, and association to udder health status

Giovanni Niero et al.

Summary: The present study evaluated the performance of the radial immunodiffusion (RID) technique for quantifying milk lactoferrin (LF) and investigated the sources of variation in LF concentration in individual milk samples. The RID method showed good repeatability and reproducibility, indicating its suitability as a consistent test for LF quantification. Milk LF was found to be positively associated with somatic cell score and negatively associated with lactose content. Lower LF concentration was observed in milk from healthy and susceptible cows compared to mastitic and chronic cows. Milk LF has the potential to be a useful biomarker for early mastitis detection.

Data fusion of near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectra and transmittance spectra for the accurate determination of rice flour constituents

Zhuopin Xu et al.

Summary: The research used NIR spectroscopic analysis and data fusion method to improve the accuracy of rice flour composition analysis. The results showed that the best prediction accuracy could be achieved through data fusion of NIRr-NIRt (1 der), outperforming models using NIRr and NIRt separately.

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy as a tool to predict non-starch polysaccharide composition and starch digestibility profiles in common monogastric cereal feed ingredients

Belen Nieto-Ortega et al.

Summary: This study found that near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) technology can accurately predict the composition of cereal grains, including non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), monosaccharide sugars, lignin, cellulose, and total starch content. It also showed the relationship between NIR and the digestibility of starch fractions in the grains for the first time.

Intake of whole grain foods and risk of coronary heart disease in US men and women

Yang Hu et al.

Summary: This study found that higher consumption of whole grains, as well as individual whole grain foods except popcorn, were significantly associated with lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The inverse associations may plateau at different intake levels for total whole grain and individual whole grain foods. This study provides further evidence in support of increasing whole grain intake for the prevention of CHD in US populations.

Shuang Fan et al.

Summary: This study developed two NIRS methods to detect amylose content and fat content in single rice kernels and improved the accuracy of the models by optimizing preprocessing and spectral range. The results show that these methods are applicable for rapid, non-destructive detection and sorting of individual rice seeds with different amylose content and fat content.

Changes in cell wall components and hygroscopic properties of Pinus radiata caused by heat treatment

Alberto Garcia-Iruela et al.

Summary: The thermal modification of Pinus radiata D. Don wood at 210 degrees C using the Thermowood method resulted in decreased equilibrium moisture content and increased hygroscopic stability, attributed to changes in hemicellulose content, cellulose percentage, lignin content, and extractives. The higher degree of crystallinity and crystal orientation of cellulose after heat treatment could explain the reduced hygroscopic properties and improved stability of the wood.
