An accurate RSS/AoA-based localization method for internet of underwater things

Azadeh Pourkabirian et al.

Summary: In this paper, we propose a hybrid localization approach for Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) based on angle-of-arrival (AoA) and received signal strength (RSS). This approach effectively locates fishes in a smart fishing scenario. By collecting RSS observation and estimating AoA based on error variance, we optimize the worst-case performance and enhance estimation accuracy. We use semidefinite programming (SDP) to solve the localization problem and derive Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) to bound the performance of the RSS-based estimator. Compared to other schemes, our method increases localization accuracy by more than 13% and can localize 96% of sensor nodes with less than 5% positioning error when there exist 25% anchors.
