Towards the Upper-Ocean Unbalanced Submesoscale Motions in the Oleander Observations

Haijin Cao et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the unbalanced submesoscale motions (USMs) in oceanic submesoscale dynamics and highlights their role in the divergence. By applying wave-vortex decomposition and vertical scale separation approaches, the study successfully identifies and separates USMs, quasi-balanced submesoscale motions (QBMs), and internal gravity waves (IGWs) using long-term repeat Oleander observations. The results show that USMs contribute significantly to the submesoscale eddy kinetic energy in winter, exhibiting a much stronger impact than other seasons.

Interannual variation of coastal upwelling around Hainan Island

Junying Zhu et al.

Summary: Coastal upwelling around Hainan Island has a significant impact on the physical environment, ecological environment, and fishery resources of the surrounding waters. The study analyzed the interannual variations of sea surface temperature (SST) around Hainan Island based on satellite observations from 2003 to 2021, focusing on the upwelling regions in Qiongdong and Qiongxi. The results showed warming trends in the upwelling regions, and the SST variations were influenced by factors such as wind stress curl, stratification, and bottom cold water in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Submesoscale processes observed by high-frequency float in the western South China sea

Haibo Tang et al.

Summary: Using high-frequency data obtained from the Navis-SL1 float with a thermal engine, this study reveals that steep isopycnals lead to submesoscale processes in the western South China Sea during a strong wind event. The mixing caused by the strong wind induced vertical isopycnals and reduced stratification in the mixed layer. The background isopycnals did not exhibit a traditional frontal structure, but submesoscale characteristics driven by mixed-layer instability (MLI) were observed. By parameterizing the streamfunction of MLI, two ageostrophic overturning circulation cells were identified, with downward vertical velocity in the center and upwelling on the sides. The horizontal velocity diagnosis showed convergence/divergence at the top/bottom of the mixed layer. The vertical equivalent heat flux induced by MLI was compared to the daily averaged surface net heat flux and found to significantly impact the buoyancy budget in the mixed layer.

A Simple Approach for Disentangling Vortical and Wavy Motions of Oceanic Flows

Chuanyin Wang et al.

Summary: A long-standing challenge in dynamical oceanography is distinguishing nonlinearly intermingled dynamical regimes of oceanic flows. Conventional approaches focus on time-scale or space-scale decomposition. In this study, a dynamics-based decomposition is pursued, where a mean flow is introduced to extend the classic theory of wavy and vortical modes. The proposed approach proves simple and efficient, particularly for online disentangling vortical and wavy motions of simulated flows. This approach can pave the way for online mixing parameterizations and understanding multiregime and multiscale interactions of oceanic flows.

Assessing the Spatio-Temporal Features and Mechanisms of Symmetric Instability Activity Probability in the Central Part of the South China Sea Based on a Regional Ocean Model

Yifei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seasonal variability of symmetric instability (SI) in the Xisha-Zhongsha waters and finds that SI is active in winter but inactive in summer. SI primarily occurs within the ocean surface mixed layer and almost disappears in the base of the surface mixed layer. The vertical component of the Ertel potential vorticity and the sea surface buoyancy flux play important roles in the seasonality of SI activity.

Submesoscale Ageostrophic Motions Within and Below the Mixed Layer of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean

Haijin Cao et al.

Summary: This study reveals the existence of strong submesoscale ageostrophic motions in the upper pycnocline of the Kuroshio Extension region through high-resolution simulations. These motions exhibit enhanced lateral buoyancy gradient and vigorous vertical velocity. The study further examines the mechanisms for the large vertical velocity and suggests that high-frequency, high-wavenumber processes dominate the vertical motions and significantly enhance the net vertical heat transport between the mixed layer and the ocean interior.

Summary: The Arctic Ocean is known for its mesoscale eddies, and this study provides the first seismic imaging of the water column in the Arctic Ocean. The observed lens-shaped mesoscale eddy exhibited specific features and movement characteristics, such as a rigid core with a rotation period of approximately 26 hours. Summary: This study investigates the latent heat flux (LH) anomalies associated with submesoscale processes in a cyclonic eddy using recent satellite-ship-coordinated air-sea observations. Unbalanced submesoscale features are identified as submesoscale SST fronts. The results show that these submesoscale fronts induce larger LH anomalies than mesoscale eddies and have a higher spatial gradient.

Evaluating the effects of a symmetric instability parameterization scheme in the Xisha-Zhongsha waters, South China Sea in winter

Yifei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impacts of symmetric instability (SI) in the Xisha-Zhongsha waters of the South China Sea using a regional ocean model. The SI parameterization scheme applied in the model successfully increases the geostrophic shear production and suppresses the potential energy release in the surface mixed layer (SML). The scheme also makes the SML depth shallower. The results demonstrate the good performance of the SI scheme in representing SI effects in regional models.
