aniMotum, an R package for animal movement data: Rapid quality control, behavioural estimation and simulation

Ian D. D. Jonsen et al.

Summary: Animal tracking data is vital for understanding the behavior, ecology, and physiology of mobile or cryptic species. Noise in the data due to imperfect measurement technologies can hinder meaningful signals, necessitating rigorous quality control in comprehensive analysis. State-space models are powerful tools to separate signal from noise, particularly for error-prone location data, enabling inference of animal movements. However, fitting these statistical models to diverse animal tracking data sets can be challenging and time-consuming. The R package aniMotum simplifies quality control and movement inference tasks for animal tracking data.

The effect of group size on individual behavior of bubble-net feeding humpback whales in the southern Gulf of Maine

Natalie C. Mastick et al.

Summary: Humpback whales are one of the few baleen whale species that use coordinated foraging strategies. This study analyzed the bubble-net feeding behaviors of 26 whales and found that individuals performed consistent feeding behaviors regardless of group size, except for a specific behavior known as the upward spiral. The complexity of foraging dives decreased with increasing group size, suggesting that larger groups require less movement and energy expenditure.

Marine mammal consumption and fisheries removals in the Nordic and Barents Seas

Mette Skern-Mauritzen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates prey consumption by the marine mammal community in the northeast Atlantic and compares it with fisheries removals. Results show that marine mammals consume slightly more prey than fisheries. Additionally, significant changes in mammal consumption over the last decades are likely related to historic whaling and rapid changes in high-latitude systems.

Equipment to tag, track and collect biopsies from whales and dolphins: the ARTS, DFHorten and LKDart systems

Lars Kleivane et al.

Summary: Among all animals used for behavioral or physiological studies, cetaceans pose the greatest challenge due to the harsh marine environment, evasive behavior during tagging, and limited time window for attaching instruments. Innovative tagging solutions are needed to better understand their life cycle, migration, physiology, behavior, health, and genetics. Off-the-shelf and custom-made sensor packages are available for short to medium term studies and large scale migration telemetry studies. However, instrument deployment remains a limiting factor for data collection.

Predator-prey overlap in three dimensions: cod benefit from capelin coming near the seafloor

Johanna Fall et al.

Summary: The study found that cod feed more intensively on capelin when capelin come close to the seafloor. Spatial overlap between predator and prey needs to be evaluated in three dimensions instead of the conventional two, especially when species are partly separated in the water column.

Feeding Hotspots and Distribution of Fin and Humpback Whales in the Norwegian Sea From 2013 to 2018

Sunniva Loviknes et al.

Summary: This study examines the summer distribution of fin and humpback whales in the Norwegian Sea from 2013 to 2018, finding a pronounced northerly shift in distribution for both species related to the availability of prey such as pelagic fish and euphausiids. The results also suggest that recent prey composition for these whales contains a large proportion of fish and that the distribution patterns are impacted by direct or indirect interspecific interactions, particularly with killer whales.

The Role of Environmental Drivers in Humpback Whale Distribution, Movement and Behavior: A Review

Jan-Olaf Meynecke et al.

Summary: Humpback whales are highly migratory species that are influenced by a variety of environmental factors throughout their lifetime. Studies have shown preferences for breeding grounds, feeding areas, and migration routes. Understanding the ecological habits and key drivers of humpback whales is crucial for future conservation efforts.

Killer whale movements on the Norwegian shelf are associated with herring density

Summary: The study found that killer whales in Norway follow Norwegian spring-spawning herring over long distances along the coast, changing their movement patterns as herring density increases. Each individual whale has different propensities towards movement.
