Investigation of biochar- modified biosand filter performance for groundwater treatment for drinking water purposes: A laboratory and pilot scale study

Jamiu O. Eniola et al.

Summary: This study examined the use of date palm biochar for enhancing the performance of biosand filters (BSFs) in groundwater treatment. The placement of date palm biochar in different regions of the filter media and its impact on the modified biosand filter (MBSF) was investigated on a lab scale. The results showed significant removal of various contaminants, such as Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, NH4+, PO43-, and total coliform, with higher removal percentages observed in the MBSF compared to the BSF. However, there was no removal observed for certain contaminants like SO4, Cl, Na, and Mg.

Phosphate adsorption using calcium aluminate decahydrate to achieve low phosphate concentrations: Batch and fixed-bed column studies

Peng Cheng et al.

Summary: The study found that CAH10, prepared by a facile hydration method, is a novel phosphate adsorbent with low phosphate concentrations. It exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 89.58 mg P/g at 25 degrees C in batch experiments. The adsorption process followed the Elovich kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model. At an equilibrium concentration of 0.1 mg P/L, the adsorption capacity reached 3.27 mg P/g. It also showed high adsorption selectivity in the presence of common anions and humic acid. The phosphate adsorption mechanism mainly involved inner-sphere complexation and surface precipitation, as supported by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS results. Fixed-bed column adsorption experiments demonstrated that CAH10 could effectively remove phosphate from real secondary effluent, achieving a low concentration of 0.1 mg P/L. This study suggests that CAH10 is a suitable adsorbent for phosphate removal in the context of secondary effluent polishing in wastewater treatment plants.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of cationic and anionic dyes onto wet-torrefied Chlorella sp. microalgal biochar. The Langmuir isotherm was found to be the best model fit, suggesting monolayer adsorption as the dominant process, with maximum adsorption capacities of 113.00 mg/g for MB and 164.35 mg/g for CR.
