Respiration rate estimation using non-linear observers in application to wastewater treatment plant

Mateusz Czyzniewski et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the problem of estimating respiration rate in a wastewater treatment plant using two new non-linear observers. Specifically, a non-linear adaptive Luenberger-like observer and a super twisting sliding mode observer are proposed to provide stable and bounded estimates of the respiration rate. An appropriate mathematical utility model is used during the synthesis of these observers, and the observability analysis is performed using a method of indistinguishable state trajectories. The stability of the observers is proven using the Lyapunov stability theory. Simulation results using data from a case study wastewater treatment plant validate the performance of the developed observers, demonstrating their high effectiveness.

A robust sliding mode observer for non-linear uncertain biochemical systems

Mateusz Czyzniewski et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the problem of state estimation for a certain class of non-linear uncertain systems. A sliding mode observer is derived to produce robust and stable estimates of the state variables. The proposed observer is investigated for stability and robustness under parametric and unstructured uncertainty. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated through simulation results on a continuous stirred tank reactor model.

Three-phase hydrodynamic simulation and experimental validation of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor

Camila D' Bastiani et al.

Summary: This research focuses on conducting multiphase solid/liquid/gas CFD simulations of a UASB reactor to validate a model that provides a clearer understanding of the hydrodynamic behavior of the three phases. The validated model showed good mixing conditions in the reactor, with minimal dead zones and a recirculation stream observed at the center. The results can be used for further optimization studies of UASB reactors.

Novel hierarchical nonlinear control algorithm to improve dissolved oxygen control in biological WWTP

Robert Piotrowski et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a hierarchical control system for a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) in a wastewater treatment plant, utilizing a nonlinear model predictive controller (MPC) based on actual measurements. The system design aims to optimize the desired DO level while minimizing the operation of actuators, resulting in improved plant performance and solution versatility.
