Materials for energy conversion in membrane distillation localized heating: Review, analysis and future perspectives of a paradigm shift

Sofiane Soukane et al.

Summary: Despite its potential in treating high salinity feeds and integrating with renewable energy, membrane distillation (MD) still faces several challenges. This article focuses on the challenges hindering MD from reaching the industry arena and presents a compilation of energy sources used in localized heating with accompanying materials. The study discusses the integration level of these materials in the MD system and provides an energy analysis comparing different energy sources. It is shown that localized heating improves the performance of MD and offers opportunities for process scale-up.

Study on the operation characteristic and transfer resistance of mechanical vapor recompression and vacuum membrane distillation system under multiple working conditions

Zetian Si et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of multiple vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) modules in combination with a mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) system to recover industrial wastewater. The experimental results demonstrate that increasing the membrane area improves freshwater production and evaporation rate. Additionally, lower feed concentration, higher feed temperature, feed flow rate, and vacuum side pressure contribute to reduced energy consumption and improved energy efficiency. The paper also calculates the transfer resistance and suggests methods to reduce it and improve energy efficiency.
