Effects of sulfamethoxazole on nitrogen transformation and antibiotic resistance genes in short-cut nitrification and denitrification process treating mariculture wastewater

Ting Li et al.

Summary: The influence of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on short-cut nitrification and denitrification (SCND) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was evaluated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). SMX dosage significantly affected the removal efficiency of NH4+-N and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). The presence of SMX altered the microbial composition, leading to changes in dominant microorganisms and an increase in antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB). 2.0 mg/L SMX induced the emergence of alternative nitrogen removal pathways and influenced the expression of nitrification and carbon source metabolism related genes, as well as the diversity and relative percentage of ARGs.

Influence mechanism of C/N ratio on heterotrophic nitrification- aerobic denitrification process

Xin Gu et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the C/N ratio can enhance the HNAD performance of Acinetobacter junii ZHG-1, but the effect diminishes when the C/N ratio exceeds 30. Therefore, more research efforts should focus on the influence mechanism of different environmental factors on the HNAD process.

Effects of various antibiotics on aerobic nitrogen removal and antibiotic degradation performance: Mechanism, degradation pathways, and microbial community evolution

Donghui Liang et al.

Summary: The selective inhibitory effects of various antibiotics on aerobic nitrogen removal were investigated, showing different removal efficiencies and degradation pathways for different antibiotics. High-throughput sequencing revealed that aerobic denitrifying, recalcitrant pollutant degrading, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria dominate during the community evolution process.

Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification process: Promising but a long way to go in the wastewater treatment

Haipeng Xi et al.

Summary: Traditional biological nitrogen removal (BNR) involves sequential nitrification and denitrification, but in recent years, novel processes like anaerobic ammonia oxidation and comammox have gained attention. Among them, heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) is particularly promising for one-stage nitrogen removal in the presence of organic carbon under aerobic conditions. This review focuses on the diversity, physiology, performance, challenges, and strategies of HN-AD bacteria.

Nitrogen removal characteristics and predicted conversion pathways of a heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacterium,Pseudomonas aeruginosaP-1

Ran Wei et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P-1) strain has high removal rates of NH4+ and utilizes both partial and complete nitrification/denitrification pathways. The strain prefers to nitrify NH4+ and only denitrifies NO2- and NO3- when NH4+ is depleted, with N2 as the final gaseous product and minimal NO2- accumulation. Additionally, P-1 can convert various nitrogen compounds under high salinity and high concentrations of heavy metals, making it a potential alternative for inorganic nitrogen removal in practical applications.

Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification characteristics and antibiotic resistance of two bacterial consortia from Marinomonas and Halomonas with effective nitrogen removal in mariculture wastewater

Fei Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the HNAD characteristics and antibiotic resistance of two bacterial consortia, MCH and MAH, and their single isolates. MCH and MAH showed greater efficiency of inorganic-N removal and preferred simultaneous HNAD in mixed N-source media. Both isolates and their consortia had high NH4+-N or NO2--N removal efficiency under optimal conditions, with consortia performing better under certain challenging conditions. Additionally, MCH and MAH exhibited higher NH4+-N removal efficiency and more stable cell quantity in real mariculture wastewater, indicating potential applications in reducing nitrogen pollution in saline environments.

A review of research progress of heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification microorganisms (HNADMs)

Tao Song et al.

Summary: Traditional nitrogen removal methods rely on autotrophic nitrification and anaerobic denitrification, but heterotrophic nitrification & aerobic denitrification microorganisms (HNADMs) have the potential to simultaneously achieve nitrification, denitrification, and even phosphorus removal. This suggests that HNADMs could be a valuable tool for wastewater pollution removal.

Hydroxylamine and the nitrogen cycle: A review

Aina Soler-Jofra et al.

Summary: Aerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria have been identified more than 100 years ago, with hydroxylamine being known as an intermediate. Recent enzymatic evidence suggests that hydroxylamine is converted to NO and further to nitrite by an unknown enzyme. The nitrogen losses in the form of NO and N2O from three types of aerobic ammonium oxidizing microorganisms, as well as the inhibitory role of hydroxylamine on nitrite oxidizing bacteria, are still under investigation.

Biochar Mitigates N2O Emission of Microbial Denitrification through Modulating Carbon Metabolism and Allocation of Reducing Power

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Research showed that biochar has a direct impact on cellular-level denitrification metabolism, with particularly strong stimulative effects seen in corn straw biochar produced at 500 degrees Celsius. This stimulating effect is mainly attributed to the bulk particles of corn straw biochar directly regulating carbon metabolism, promoting the use of produced reducing power for nitrogen reduction and subsequently reducing the accumulation of N2O.
