Effect of nitrogen and iron supplementation on the process performance and microbial community structure of a hydrogen-producing reactor continuously fed with tequila vinasse

Octavio Garcia-Depraect et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance and microbial community structure of a dark fermentation process using tequila vinasse as a substrate. It found that the addition of external nutrients significantly influenced hydrogen production, and maintaining a suitable C/N ratio was crucial for the balance and syntrophy between lactic acid bacteria and bioH(2) producers. The biohythane process resulted in higher bioenergy recovery compared to single-stage anaerobic digestion.

Neglected effect of transportation on the property of municipal biowaste and the subsequent biomethane potential

Erqi Nie et al.

Summary: The long-distance transportation of municipal biowaste can affect its physio-chemical characteristics and subsequent anaerobic digestion performance. This study found that transportation led to high hydrolysis and acidification rates, as well as the production of lactic acid. The results highlight the need to avoid the further conversion of lactic acid and provide important guidelines for optimizing biogas production. Furthermore, the lactic acid-rich property of municipal biowaste opens up other value-added pathways for resource recovery.

Improving the energetic utilization of household food waste: Impact of temperature and atmosphere during storage

Gregor Sailer et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of storage duration and temperature on household food waste. After aerobic storage, water content and organic dry matter concentrations decreased, resulting in decreased energy potential. However, anaerobic storage preserved the energy content of the food waste.

Influence of Storage Time of Food Waste on the Substrate Characteristics and Energetic Potential Through Anaerobic Digestion

Brayan Alexis Parra-Orobio et al.

Summary: The storage time of food waste affects the anaerobic digestion process, with longer storage inhibiting methane production. Using food waste for electricity production or as biofuel is a better option in terms of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, while landfill disposal is the least desirable choice.

Two-stage anaerobic digestion of food waste: Enhanced bioenergy production rate by steering lactate-type fermentation during hydrolysis-acidogenesis

Octavio Garcia-Depraect et al.

Summary: This study proposed a lactate-based two-stage anaerobic digestion process and investigated the effect of inoculum addition and culture pH on hydrolysis-acidogenesis and further methanization. The results showed that self fermentation at uncontrolled pH can lead to lactate accumulation and increased bioenergy production rate.

Populational and metabolic shifts induced by acetate, butyrate and lactate in dark fermentation

Marie Celine Noguer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of acetate, butyrate, and lactate on dark fermentation. High concentrations of these acids inhibited hydrogen production and caused a shift in bacterial communities. At lower concentrations, the nature and concentration of the added acid shaped metabolic and populational changes.

Production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from five commercial bioplastics via acidogenic fermentation

Octavio Garcia-Depraect et al.

Summary: The feasibility of producing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from poly-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) through acidogenic fermentation was investigated. It was found that VFAs can be produced from PHB and PHBV, but not from PBS, PCL, and PLA. High concentration of PHA substrates resulted in organic overloading and accumulation of VFAs.

Influence of key operational parameters on biohydrogen production from fruit and vegetable waste via lactate-driven dark fermentation

Leonardo J. Martinez-Mendoza et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of operational parameters on biohydrogen production from fruit-vegetable waste via lactate-driven dark fermentation. The results show that more neutral pH values and low total solids concentrations result in higher hydrogen yields and rates, while higher biomass densities enable higher production rates and reduce variations in hydrogen production.

David Marin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to integrate anaerobic digestion of food waste with photosynthetic biogas upgrading to obtain high-quality biomethane and nutrient-rich algal biomass. The results showed that the integration of anaerobic digestion with a high-rate algal pond resulted in efficient biogas production and CO2 removal, as well as effective removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by the algae.

Impact of storage duration and micro-aerobic conditions on lactic acid production from food waste

Zengshuai Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of storage time on food waste characteristics and its potential for lactic acid production was investigated. It was found that the sugars in food waste were mostly consumed within 7 to 15 days of storage, and the addition of enzymes and micro-aerobic conditions can enhance lactic acid production by improving polysaccharides hydrolysis.
