Shilin Song et al.

Summary: A synergistic system of water falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and persulfate (PS) was established for the oxidation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in water. The activation of PS in the DBD system was confirmed, and factors affecting CIP degradation and the degradation process were studied. The presence of PS greatly improved the degradation and mineralization of CIP, with a degradation efficiency of 97.73% achieved after only 40 minutes of treatment with 4 mM PS addition. Various factors such as PS concentration, CIP concentration, solution pH, and metal ion addition affected the CIP degradation.

Enhanced sulfadiazine degradation in a multi-electrode paralleling DBD plasma system coupled with ZnO/cellulose acetate films

Sisi Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, the catalysis of ZnO/cellulose acetate (CA) films in a multi-electrode paralleling dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system for sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation was investigated. The results revealed that the addition of ZnO/CA films into the DBD plasma system could enhance the formation of O3, ·OH, and 1O2 reactive species. The optimal condition for the catalyst was the addition of 4 pieces of 3% ZnO/CA films. The ZnO/CA films showed a better catalytic effect compared to an equal amount of nano ZnO powder addition. The ZnO/CA films remained catalytically active after four cycles of usage in the DBD plasma system. The possible degradation pathways were speculated by analyzing the inorganic and organic intermediates formed during the SDZ degradation.

Synergistic catalysis of Cu-CeO2@CA composite film in a circulating DBD plasma system and its effect on ciprofloxacin degradation

Kun Hu et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in a circulating dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system with Cu-CeO2@CA composite films addition. The Cu-CeO2@CA films were synthesized through hydrothermal method and characterized by various techniques. The results showed a synergistic effect between the DBD plasma and the Cu-CeO2@CA films on CIP degradation and mineralization. In addition to the DBD plasma, the Cu-CeO2@CA films promoted O3 decomposition, photocatalysis, and the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The toxicity of the solution decreased after treatment in the Cu-CeO2@CA/DBD system, as indicated by toxicity evaluation results.

A novel polydopamine-modified metal organic frameworks catalyst with enhanced catalytic performance for efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole in wastewater

Jin Hou et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel polydopamine (PDA)-modified metal organic frameworks (MOFs) catalyst (MIL/PDA) was successfully fabricated and used to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in wastewater. The PDA-modified catalyst showed superior catalytic performance and enhanced SMX degradation compared to pure MOFs. The physical-chemical properties of the MIL/PDA catalyst were characterized, and its application in SMX degradation was evaluated. The modification of PDA enhanced electron transfer and promoted the redox cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II), leading to increased production of active oxygen species. MIL/PDA exhibited high stability and reusable performance over multiple cycles. Both radical and non-radical pathways were confirmed to be involved in the PS activation process. Five degradation pathways of SMX were proposed based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) results. This study provides new insight into the design of novel and efficient heterogeneous catalysts for advanced wastewater treatment.

Fe3O4 catalytic ozonation of iohexol degradation in the presence of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole: Performance, transformation mechanism, and pathways

Chen-Yan Hu et al.

Summary: This study explored the degradation of iohexol, an iodine X-ray contrast media, under heterogeneous ozone-catalyzed oxidation with the addition of Fe3O4 and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT). Results showed that increasing the dosages of Fe3O4 catalyst and ozone, as well as solution pH, enhanced the degradation of iohexol. Low concentrations of humic acid (HA) and HBT promoted iohexol degradation, while high concentrations inhibited it. The Fe3O4 /O-3/HBT process had a higher degradation rate constant compared to the Fe3O4 /O-3 and O3 processes. Singlet oxygen, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide radical were identified in the Fe3O4 /O-3/HBT process. The presence of HBT further enhanced the heterogeneous ozone-catalyzed process.
