Association of Dietary Patterns with MRI Markers of Hepatic Inflammation and Fibrosis in the MAST4HEALTH Study

Athina Amanatidou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between dietary patterns and MRI parameters in European NAFLD patients. The results showed a positive correlation between the Western dietary pattern and the severity of liver disease, while the Low-Fat Dairy and Poultry dietary pattern was associated with lower liver disease values. These findings emphasize the importance of diet in NAFLD.

A branched-chain amino acid-based metabolic score can predict liver fat in children and adolescents with severe obesity

Julia Lischka et al.

Summary: This study found that children with NAFLD had higher levels of plasma branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), which correlated with MRI-PDFF. A linear regression model adjusted for age, sex, and pubertal stage, consisting of BCAAs, ALT, GGT, ferritin, and insulin, predicted MRI-PDFF effectively.ROC analysis of this model revealed high AUCs for detecting different levels of steatosis, outperforming previously published scores.

Serum aromatic and branched-chain amino acids associated with NASH demonstrate divergent associations with serum lipids

Vanessa D. de Mello et al.

Summary: This study investigated the serum metabolite profile in relation to NAFLD-associated metabolic risk factors using a non-targeted metabolomics approach. The results showed that the AAAs and BCAAs related to NASH demonstrate divergent associations with serum lipids. Specifically, tryptophan correlated with LDL-c, potentially due to molecular events affecting LDLR mRNA expression and methylation of genes associated with NASH.

Mitochondrial dysfunction as a mechanistic biomarker in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

Saima Ajaz et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates for the first time the association of NAFLD progression with mitochondrial dysfunction and changes in metabolites related to the urea cycle. A unique panel of mitochondrial-based signatures was identified to differentiate between stages of NAFLD progression.

The effect of physical activity level and exercise training on the association between plasma branched-chain amino acids and intrahepatic lipid content in participants with obesity

Froukje Vanweert et al.

Summary: The study found a positive correlation between plasma valine, isoleucine, leucine levels, and intrahepatic lipid content, which was not affected by physical activity levels. Additionally, exercise training was effective in reducing intrahepatic lipid content in individuals with NAFL and CON, but had no significant impact on plasma BCAA levels.

Metabolomics and lipidomics in NAFLD: biomarkers and non-invasive diagnostic tests

Mojgan Masoodi et al.

Summary: Metabolomics and lipidomics approaches are utilized to identify biomarkers for NAFLD, with significant contributions in clinical studies; key metabolic pathway alterations in NAFLD and NASH have been identified, potentially serving as biomarkers for non-invasive diagnostic tests. Despite the discovery of potential biomarkers, few have been validated for clinical use.
