Rubiflavin G, photorubiflavin G, and photorubiflavin E: Novel pluramycin derivatives from Streptomyces sp. W2061 and their anticancer activity against breast cancer cells

Byeongsan Lee et al.

Summary: The pluramycin family of antibiotics includes angucycline compounds derived from actinomycetes with anticancer and antibacterial properties. Pluramycins have a structural characteristic of two linked aminoglycosides on the γ-pyrone angucycline backbone. Kidamycins and rubiflavins were screened and characterized, and their cytotoxicity against breast cancer cell lines was evaluated. Photokidamycin showed significant inhibition of cell growth in both MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cells.

Identification of Antimicrobial Compounds in Two Streptomyces sp. Strains Isolated From Beehives

Fernando Santos-Beneit et al.

Summary: The World Health Organization warns of the increasing deaths caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria and emphasizes the need for short-term alternatives. Recent studies have found that honeybees and their products carry Streptomyces species with strong antibacterial activity. This study investigates the antibiotic profiles of two Streptomyces strains isolated from beehives and suggests their potential in discovering bioactive compounds with antimicrobial and anticancer properties.

Comparison of Clinical Outcomes of Borderline Resectable Pancreatic Cancer According to the Neoadjuvant Chemo-Regimens: Gemcitabine versus FOLFIRINOX

Yoo Jin Choi et al.

Summary: The study found that FOLFIRINOX provided more clinical and oncological benefit than gemcitabine in treating BRPC patients, including higher overall survival and lower recurrence rates. However, since FOLFIRINOX causes more adverse effects, the treatment regimen should be individualized based on the patient's general condition and clinical status.

Genome mining for drug discovery: cyclic lipopeptides related to daptomycin

Richard H. Baltz

Summary: Cyclic lipopeptide antibiotics structurally related to daptomycin share common initiation, elongation, and termination mechanisms, allowing for the generation of a variety of compounds with different antibacterial mechanisms through target-agnostic resistance and combinatorial biosynthesis. Molecular beacons like FAAL, ACP, and dimodular NRPS genes have been used to identify phylogenetically related biosynthetic gene clusters in finished and draft genome sequences, leading to the discovery of new lipopeptide BGCs and a novel daptomycin family BGC.
