Metabolomics and Self-Reported Depression, Anxiety, and Phobic Symptoms in the VA Normative Aging Study

Nicole Prince et al.

Summary: Traditional approaches to understanding metabolomics in mental illness have focused on investigating a single disorder or comparisons between diagnoses. However, this study found overlapping and distinct metabolites associated with different mental health dimensions, suggesting potential shared underlying biology. Furthermore, three specific metabolites showed a higher degree of alteration in men with poor scores in multiple dimensions, indicating a differing degree of perturbation when depression and anxiety symptoms co-occur.

Metabolomic Evidence for Peroxisomal Dysfunction in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Xiaoyu Che et al.

Summary: This study conducted metabolomic analysis of plasma from 106 ME/CFS cases and 91 healthy controls. The findings showed that ME/CFS patients had decreased levels of certain plasma components and elevated levels of others. Using machine learning algorithms, ME/CFS patients could be differentiated from controls. The results suggest a potential link between ME/CFS and peroxisomal dysfunction, dysregulation of lipid remodeling, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle.

Summary: ME/CFS is a debilitating disease that affects energy metabolism, with common and context-dependent metabolic changes found in patients. Elevated energy strain is likely a key symptom of ME/CFS, presenting a potential target for intervention.
