Breath analysis combined with cardiopulmonary exercise testing and echocardiography for monitoring heart failure patients: the AEOLUS protocol

Summary: This paper describes the AEOLUS pilot study, which combines breath analysis with cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and echocardiographic examination for monitoring heart failure (HF) patients. The study found that HF patients had increased levels of acetone and pentane in their breath, which are related to fatty acid oxidation and oxidative stress. These preliminary findings suggest that the simultaneous acquisition of CPET-ESE and breath analysis can provide additional clinical information on the metabolic maladaptation of HF patients to exercise.

Breath acetone concentration: too heterogeneous to constitute a diagnosis or prognosis biomarker in heart failure? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the potential of exhaled breath acetone (ExA) as a biomarker for heart failure (HF). The results suggest that ExA shows significant heterogeneity in healthy controls (HC), but individual studies indicate excellent diagnostic and prognostic value in HF patients. Variability factors, such as fasting state, sampling type, and analytical method, may further improve the accuracy of ExA as a biomarker in HF.
