Summary: The safety of seafood is a critical public health concern in Korea due to the high rate of raw seafood consumption. A study was conducted in 2018 to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of fecal-associated bacteria in seawater samples and aquatic animals collected from aquaculture farms along the Korean coast. The results showed that Escherichia coli was the most prevalent and exhibited resistance to multiple antimicrobials.

Cellulolytic Bacillus Strain: Production Optimization Using Wheat Bran under Solid-State Fermentation and Investigation of Its Probiotic Potential

Summary: The attention towards cellulolytic bacteria with probiotic potential in animal feeding has increased in recent years. This study aimed to identify probiotic characteristics and test the cellulolytic ability of Bacillus strains isolated from the dromedary gastrointestinal tract. Among the isolates, Bacillus amyloliquefacians D1B3 showed the highest cellulolytic activity and was found to have probiotic attributes such as antimicrobial activity and tolerance to low pH and bile salt. Additionally, it demonstrated the potential to improve in vitro fermentation of wheat bran and enhance rumen fermentation of animal feed.

Summary: Antibiotic growth promoters have been used in pig diets for gut health and growth performance, but their misuse has led to antibiotic resistance, imbalanced microflora, and residues. Probiotic bacteria, specifically heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum L-137, have shown potential as an alternative. Our study found that supplementing HK L-137 in pig diets improves production performance and immune function.

Bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances production by Enterococcus faecium 135 in co-culture with Ligilactobacillus salivarius and Limosilactobacillus reuteri

Summary: The present study investigated the production of bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) by a newly isolated strain of Enterococcus faecium 135, and its co-cultivation with Ligilactobacillus salivarius and Limosilactobacillus reuteri. The produced BLIS showed antimicrobial activity, especially against Listeria monocytogenes. The results suggest that the BLIS produced by E. faecium 135 has the potential to be used as an antimicrobial agent in animal breeding.

Adhesion and aggregation properties of Lactobacillaceae strains as protection ways against enteropathogenic bacteria

Summary: This study compared the adhesion and aggregation abilities of different strains belonging to Lactobacillaceae species and found that the adhesion degree depended on the species and origin of the strain. All tested strains showed adhesion to Caco-2 and HT-29 cell lines, with L. rhamnosus and L. acidophilus strains performing the best in competition adherence test. Additionally, all tested lactobacilli strains exhibited varying degrees of auto- and co-aggregation abilities.
