Temporal trend, spatial analysis and spatiotemporal clusters of infant mortality associated with congenital toxoplasmosis in Brazil: Time series from 2000 to 2020

Matheus Santos Melo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the spatial, temporal and spatial-temporal patterns of infant mortality associated with congenital toxoplasmosis in Brazil between 2000 and 2020. By using ecological study of time series, spatial analysis and spatiotemporal scan, infant mortality rates were obtained from the Mortality Information System of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The findings showed an increasing trend of infant mortality associated with congenital toxoplasmosis in Brazil during the study period, with heterogeneous distribution and evidence of risk clusters.

Socioeconomic factors associated with infection by Toxoplasma gondii and Toxocara canis in children

Thais Cabral Monica et al.

Summary: The study examined the seroprevalence and risk factors of toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis in schoolchildren in Jataizinho, Parana, revealing associations with factors such as the mother's education level, age, presence of cats in the household, income, and presence of dogs. There was also an association between the two zoonoses, highlighting the importance of implementing control measures to reduce the incidence and risks of sequelae in children.

Toxoplasmosis Outbreak Associated With Toxoplasma gondii-Contaminated Venison-High Attack Rate, Unusual Clinical Presentation, and Atypical Genotype

Amy C. Schumacher et al.

Summary: In 2017, an outbreak of toxoplasmosis was linked to undercooked venison served at a retreat in Wisconsin. Most of the attendees experienced illness, with laboratory results showing atypical features for toxoplasmosis. The strain of T. gondii found in the venison was a unique genotype, highlighting the potential risks of consuming undercooked game meat in North America.

Contaminated water confirmed as source of infection by bioassay in an outbreak of toxoplasmosis in South Brazil

Camila Encarnacao Minuzzi et al.

Summary: The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is a major food- and waterborne pathogen worldwide, with the outbreak of toxoplasmosis in Santa Maria, Brazil in 2018 suggesting waterborne infection. Study results confirmed the presence of viable oocysts in the contaminated water, as indicated by seroconversion in piglets and PCR-positive tests in mice inoculated with tissues from the infected piglets.

Digging into Toxoplasma gondii infections via soil: A quantitative microbial risk assessment approach

Huifang Deng et al.

Summary: Soil has been identified as an important source of exposure to Toxoplasma gondii, and a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) model was developed to estimate the risk associated with T. gondii exposure via accidental soil ingestion in the Netherlands. Detection of T. gondii oocysts and DNA in soil samples was successful, with an estimated incidence rate of infection ranging from 0.3 to 1.8 per 1000 individuals per day. Data gaps were identified, and the model structure can be used for more accurate risk estimates with additional data.

Tamirat T. Temesgen et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of three different washing techniques in removing parasite contaminants from berries. Results showed that washing berries under cold tap water for 1 minute can remove at least 80% of parasites, with Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis being more effectively removed than Cyclospora cayetanensis.

Outbreaks of clinical toxoplasmosis in humans: five decades of personal experience, perspectives and lessons learned

Jitender P. Dubey

Summary: This study critically reviewed outbreaks of clinical toxoplasmosis in humans from 1966 to 2020, finding most outbreaks occurred in Brazil. There were no apparent differences in symptoms between meat-acquired and oocyst-acquired infections. Fever, cervical lymphadenopathy, myalgia, and fatigue were the most important symptoms, and they were not age-dependent.

Toxoplasma gondii in South America: a differentiated pattern of spread, population structure and clinical manifestations

Gabriella de Lima Bessa et al.

Summary: Toxoplasma gondii has high health impacts in South America compared to other regions, with frequent reports of ocular disease in immunocompetent individuals. Treatment usually involves a combination of SDZ and PYR, but reports of treatment failures and drug resistance, especially in South America, suggest challenges in managing the disease. Studies also indicate potential reinfection in humans despite the belief of immunological protection post initial infection.
