Molecular Detection of Porcine Parainfluenza Viruses 1 and 5 Using a Newly Developed Duplex Real-Time RT-PCR in South Korea

Jong-Min Kim et al.

Summary: A highly specific and sensitive dqRT-PCR assay was developed for simultaneous detection of PPIV1 and PPIV5 in clinical pig samples. The assay showed high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, and was able to detect PPIV1 and PPIV5 in Korean pig herds. Phylogenetic analysis revealed genetically diverse PPIV1 strains in Korean pig herds. This dqRT-PCR assay will be a valuable tool for diagnosis and further studies on PPIV1 and PPIV5.

Detection of a novel porcine circovirus 4 in Korean pig herds using a loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay

Da-Young Kim et al.

Summary: A novel LAMP assay for the visual detection of PCV4 has been developed with high sensitivity and specificity, resulting in higher detection rates in clinical samples compared to conventional PCR methods. This low-cost and easy-to-use assay can be a valuable tool for detecting PCV4, even in resource-limited laboratories.

Characterization of parainfluenza virus 5 from diarrheic piglet highlights its zoonotic potential

Yassein M. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: In this study, a strain of Parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5) was successfully isolated from diarrheic piglets. The isolated PIV5 strain showed the ability to infect various host cell lines and haemagglutinate red blood cells from guinea pigs and chickens. An indirect ELISA method was developed to detect PIV5-specific antibodies, and the positive rate in porcine serum samples was found to be 75.7%. This is the first report characterizing a PIV5 strain isolated from a diarrheic piglet and providing insights into its zoonotic potential.

A lyophilized colorimetric RT-LAMP test kit for rapid, low-cost, at-home molecular testing of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens

Xin Song et al.

Summary: This study developed a rapid, low-cost lyophilized nucleic acid test kit for self-administered at-home testing, which showed reduced false positives and enhanced tolerance to a wider range of incubation temperatures compared to solution-based tests. The assay successfully detected a panel of SARS-CoV-2 variants and can be easily adapted for other important pathogens and infectious diseases with a simple change of the primer set.
