The Effect of LiFePO4 Particle Size and Surface Area on the Performance of LiFePO4/Graphite Cells

E. R. Logan et al.

Summary: This study investigates capacity loss mechanisms in LiFePO4 (LFP)/graphite cells by examining carbon-coated LFP materials with different surface area and particle size. The results show that cells with lower surface area LFP material experience more severe capacity fade and exhibit more micro-fractures. Additionally, the study finds that while excess water contamination can be removed to inhibit Fe deposition, the direct impact of Fe deposition on capacity fade is small.

Thermally modulated lithium iron phosphate batteries for mass-market electric vehicles

Xiao-Guang Yang et al.

Summary: The development of thermally modulated LFP battery can provide adequate cruise range and extend the range through short recharges, eliminating range anxiety for electric vehicles. Designed to operate at a working temperature of around 60 degrees Celsius in any ambient condition, it promises to be an ideal powertrain for mass-market EVs. Furthermore, utilizing low surface area graphite presents an opportunity to prolong the lifespan of EVs to over two million miles.
