Study of the melting performance of shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage unit under the action of rotating finned tube

Zhang-Jing Zheng et al.

Summary: Compared to non-uniformly arranged fin, uniformly arranged fin performs better in complete melting-solidification performance, but not in the melting process. To improve the melting process, this study proposes the method of rotating finned tube. Numerical investigation shows that the rotating finned tube enhances the convective heat transfer of PCM and reduces the average synergy angle in the phase change region. It is recommended to have a rotational speed of the finned tube no less than 2 rpm and increasing the fin number can start the rotation earlier.

Bilal Ahmad et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has a long-lasting influence on global economies, leading to increased energy consumption by households. This study investigates the relevant factors of energy consumption amidst the pandemic and finds significant associations between positive anticipated emotions, perceived behavioral control, perceived environmental concern, perceived monetary benefits, and intention to save energy. Furthermore, the study reveals that the perceived COVID-19 disruptiveness moderates the relationship between intention to save energy and energy-saving behavior.

PIV experimental study on the phase change behavior of phase change material with partial filling of metal foam inside a cavity during melting

Aihua Liu et al.

Summary: The present experimental research investigates the transient phase change performance of phase change material (PCM) with partial filling of metal foam in a vertically heated cavity. The experimental results reveal that the metal foam enhances thermal conduction in porous areas but suppresses thermal convection in pure PCM areas. Lower porous filling accelerates the melting process and should be chosen as the optimum porous filling strategy.

Nanoparticles to Enhance Melting Performance of Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage

Yu Han et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of phase change materials (PCM) as thermal energy storage units to enhance the stability and flexibility of solar-energy-based heating and cooling systems. A mathematical model is developed to evaluate the melting process of PCM, taking into consideration the effect of nanoparticles on heat transfer. The results show that natural convection plays a dominant role in the flow behavior of PCM melting, and the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles improves PCM melting performance but higher thermal conductivity does not contribute significantly to the melting performance of PCMs.

Numerical investigation and optimal design of partially filled sectorial metal foam configuration in horizontal latent heat storage unit

Hongyang Zuo et al.

Summary: The study shows that increasing the filling angle can enhance the melting rate, but the increase rate will decrease significantly when the angle reaches a certain value. Increasing the thickness of the configuration deteriorates cost performance, but excessive reduction in thickness will restrict the enhancement of the melting rate. The ladder shape design is more advantageous in reducing the full melting time and the amount of metal foam used.
