Synergistic incorporation of Fe and Co into nickel boride/NiCoHydroxide nanosheets to tune voltage plateau and charge storage in supercapacitors

Akanksha Joshi et al.

Summary: In this study, the inclusive role of metal ions and their influence on the electrochemical window is discussed in the context of a trimetallic boride/NiCoHydroxide integrated electrode. The addition of cobalt lowers the work function and increases the number of active sites and charge transfer kinetics, while the addition of iron extends the electrochemical window. In an integrated electrode, the work function difference between the boride and the NiCoHydroxide generates an electric field acting as a potential barrier and extends the potential window. This work provides insights into tuning the voltage plateau by varying metal ions with different work functions.

Quasi-solid-state hybrid supercapacitors assembled by Ni-Co-P@C/Ni-B nanoarrays and porous carbon nanofibers with N-doped C nanocages

Erdenebayar Baasanjav et al.

Summary: In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on developing hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) that can offer high energy density and superior power density. The key challenge in achieving high-performance HSCs is to reduce the kinetic mismatch between the rapid capacitor-type anode and sluggish battery-type cathode. Improving the interface, morphology, and microstructure of the electrode material is an effective approach to overcome the kinetic imbalance. In this study, a core-shell nanoarray structure consisting of ultrathin carbon-coated crystalline Ni-Co-phosphide (Ni-Co-P@C) and amorphous Ni-boride (Ni-B) is fabricated on a nickel foam substrate as the positive electrode material (Ni-Co-P@C/Ni-B). Theoretical analyses confirm that Ni-Co-P@C/Ni-B exhibits the best metallic characteristic and the most stable OH* absorption energy, resulting in enhanced charge storage performance compared to Ni-Co-P and Ni-Co-P/Ni-B. The negative electrode is composed of porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (HP-NCFs) derived from tightly embedded metal-organic framework (ZIF-8) with interconnected N-C nanocages, which exhibit excellent charge storage kinetics. The battery-type Ni-Co-P@C/Ni-B electrode achieves a specific capacity of 306.2 mA h g-1 at 3 mA cm-2, while the highly porous capacitive HP-N-CFs electrode shows the highest capacity of 56 mA h g-1 at 2.5 mA cm-2. The assembled quasi-solid-state (Ni-Co-P@C/Ni-B//HP-N-CFs) HSCs exhibit the highest energy density of 68.3 W h kg-1 at a power density of 472 W kg-1, along with excellent rate capability (68% at 50 mA cm-2) and decent cyclic durability (90% retention over 10,000 cycles).
