Determinants of emissions pathways in the coupled climate-social system

Frances C. Moore et al.

Summary: The ambition and effectiveness of climate policies play a crucial role in determining greenhouse gas emissions and the scale of climate change impacts. However, most climate change models treat the socio-politico-technical processes that determine climate policy and emissions trajectories as external factors. This study identifies relevant feedback processes and connects them in a stylized model of the climate-social system. The analysis of the model reveals potential nonlinearities and tipping points in the connections across different scales, which can significantly influence policy and emissions outcomes. Public perceptions of climate change, the future cost and effectiveness of mitigation technologies, and the responsiveness of political institutions emerge as important factors in explaining variations in emissions pathways and constraints on warming.
