Microgel-enhanced thermal-sensitive hydrogel electrolyte enables active heat management, controllable energy storage and mechanical flexibility of supercapacitors

Yang Gao et al.

Summary: Microgel-enhanced thermal-sensitive hydrogels are utilized as electrolytes to achieve active heat management, controllable energy storage, and mechanical flexibility in supercapacitors. The improved thermal sensitivity of microgel-enhanced hydrogel electrolyte allows efficient heat consumption through volume phase transition, while slowing down ion transport to weaken the energy storage process. Reversibly controlled energy storage is demonstrated by varying temperature below and above the volume phase transition temperature of the hydrogel electrolytes. The hydrogel electrolytes also provide mechanical flexibility, allowing stable charge-discharge under a bending angle from 0 to 180 degrees. Overall, this work provides a new clue for constructing intelligent hydrogel devices through elegant structure design.

Hydrogen bond regulating in hydrogel electrolytes for enhancing the antifreeze ability of a flexible zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor

Yueyue Bao et al.

Summary: Hydrogel electrolytes have gained significant attention for flexible supercapacitors due to their flexibility, safety, and portability. However, the freezing of water molecules in conventional hydrogels limits their use in extremely cold environments. In this study, an anti-freezing hydrogel electrolyte was successfully fabricated using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), and a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-water solvent. The addition of DMSO prevented water molecules from freezing, resulting in excellent mechanical performance and electrochemical properties at low temperatures. This work provides a potent strategy for creating stretchable and anti-freezing hydrogel electrolytes for high-capacity flexible supercapacitors under extreme cold conditions.
