An environmental optimal power flow framework of hybrid power systems with pumped hydro storage

Ambarish Panda et al.

Summary: The novelty of this study lies in proposing a combined operational strategy for a wind-solar-thermal (WST) system with a pumped hydro storage (PHS) facility to address the intermittency of wind and solar power. The study uses an environmental optimal power flow (EOPF) framework to optimize for emission minimization, operating cost reduction, and voltage security maximization. The challenge is to schedule and dispatch electrical power in a hybrid power system (HPS) without violating real-time operational constraints. The study evaluates various hybrid configurations using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique and shows that the WST-PHS configuration achieves significant savings in operating cost, emission reduction, and voltage security enhancement compared to other HPS.

Cooling potential for hot climates by utilizing thermal management of compressed air energy storage systems

Abdul Hai Alami et al.

Summary: This study presents findings on using the expansion stage of compressed air energy storage systems for air conditioning purposes. The proposed setup can produce low temperature chilled water and has the potential to replace commercial compression cooling air conditioners. The system also serves as an energy storage and improves the roundtrip efficiency while handling a portion of the cooling load.

A smart grid poly-generation design for hot arid regions composed of multi-effect distillation (MED), compressed air energy storage (CAES), and parabolic trough solar collector field (PTSC)

Sina Khaleghi et al.

Summary: This article presents a thermodynamic investigation of a novel polygeneration smart grid system that integrates multieffect distillation, compressed air energy storage, and a parabolic trough solar collector field to produce power and water. The system is designed to increase the round-trip efficiency by about 33.5%. Parametric analysis shows that the inlet motive steam mass flow rate and the maximum pressure of the air cavern significantly affect the production of distilled water and the round-trip efficiency, respectively.

Experimental evaluation of compressed air energy storage as a potential replacement of electrochemical batteries

Abdul Hai Alami et al.

Summary: This work reports on an experimental compressed air energy storage system and compares it with a battery-inverter setup. The results show that the battery provides higher energy and power results at the same pressure. This work paves the way for further experiments and innovation in specialized air handling turbines for large-scale energy storage.

Design, thermodynamic, and wind assessments of a compressed air energy storage (CAES) integrated with two adjacent wind farms: A case study at Abhar and Kahak sites, Iran

Amir Reza Razmi et al.

Summary: A CAES facility proposed for wind farms in Iran helps stabilize power generation by storing wind energy during peak demand hours, with higher wind speeds recorded in July. The facility contributes stored power to the grid with round trip efficiencies of 52%, 47%, and 43% in July, August, and September.
