The need for energy storage on renewable energy generator outputs to lessen the Geeth effect, i.e. short-term variations mainly associated with wind turbine active power output

Tony Kealy

Summary: This study examines short-term variations in power output from wind turbine generators using real-time empirical data. The variability phenomenon, named the Geeth Effect, is found to occur continuously and may contribute to lower-than-expected financial and environmental benefits, as well as challenges in maintaining a stable electricity grid. Energy storage methods, such as supercapacitors and battery energy storage systems, are recommended to minimize the Geeth Effect.

Stochastic power management strategy for optimal day-ahead scheduling of wind-HESS considering wind power generation and market price uncertainties

Marzieh Khosravi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a stochastic framework for power management of a wind-hybrid ESS (HESS) to maximize the DA market profit through bidding a scheduled power, based on a mixed-integer linear programming. By considering uncertainties in wind power generation and DA market prices, scenarios are generated using Monte-Carlo method and roulette wheel, while ensuring the state of charge of HESS stays within a safe range. This approach aims to submit power to the DA market with no deviation and increase profit.

Design and Optimization of Fractional Order PID Controller to Enhance Energy Storage System Contribution for Damping Low-Frequency Oscillation in Power Systems Integrated with High Penetration of Renewable Sources

Hasan Ali Abumeteir et al.

Summary: This paper proposes adding a controller to the energy storage system (ESS) to enhance its contribution to damping low-frequency oscillation (LFO) in power systems integrated with different types of renewable energy sources (RES). Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) is suggested as an ESS, and the PID and FOPID controllers are used with SMES. The optimal values for the controllers are obtained using particle swarm optimization (PSO). The results show that the proposed controller with SMES performs superiorly in both the time domain and by eigenvalues analysis.

Multi-mode control strategy for a stand-alone wind energy conversion system with battery energy storage

Aziz Watil et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the problem of controlling a stand-alone wind energy conversion system with battery storage. By designing a battery charge controller and a battery energy management algorithm, the balance between the power flow from the wind turbine to the DC load and the battery is achieved. A nonlinear adaptive algorithm is developed to estimate the battery SOC without the need for sensors. The proposed controller is tested on a semi-experimental platform, and the results show that it performs well.

A new predictive control strategy for improving operating performance of a permanent magnet synchronous generator-based wind energy and superconducting magnetic energy storage hybrid system integrated with grid

Neelam Mughees et al.

Summary: This research proposes an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) as an observer for predictive current control (PCC) of a permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) connected with a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system and the main power grid. The UKF observer estimates important parameters of the PMSG in the hybrid WECS-SMES configuration. Additionally, a novel control configuration based on fractional order-PI (FOPI) controllers is proposed for the SMES system. The simulated results demonstrate the superior performance of the UKF observer and the FOPI controllers under different wind speed conditions and noisy measurements.
