Perceptions on the processes of sustainable rating systems and their combined application with Lean construction

Paula Aristizabal-Monsalve et al.

Summary: Sustainable building rating systems and lean construction are initiatives that are developed independently without understanding how their joint implementation can enhance the achievement of their objectives. This research, through literary review, interviews, and surveys, found a lack of conceptual knowledge and academic research demonstrating the benefits of lean construction in reducing environmental impacts during the construction phase and in the scope of qualification criteria. Despite the misinformation, developers perceive an opportunity and a positive feeling about the joint application.

Customisation of green buildings assessment tools based on climatic zoning and experts judgement using K-means clustering and fuzzy AHP

Mehrdad Sadeghi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new framework for customizing green building assessment tools for regions or countries with various climates. The framework uses K-means clustering and silhouette value (SV) for climate classification, and fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (AHP) for adjusting regulations. The research findings demonstrate the impact of local climates on sustainability priorities in green building assessment.

How are indicators in Green Building Rating Systems addressing sustainability dimensions and life cycle frameworks in residential buildings?

Marta Braulio-Gonzalo et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore how indicators in Green Building Rating Systems (GBRS) address the different dimensions of sustainability and analyze their usage in various stages of the building lifecycle. The results reveal that GBRS focuses more on the environmental dimension, while the social and economic dimensions require more attention. The indicators should be considered in the early design stage to achieve a comprehensive lifecycle assessment. Additionally, there is a need for more information modules to cover aspects beyond the GBRS framework that are relevant to the building lifecycle.

H. P. Thanu et al.

Summary: The study aims to develop a Building Performance Score (BPS) model based on the triple bottom priorities, considering environmental, economic, and social factors. Findings show that various indicators such as topographical and climate change, health and safety of construction workers, project management consultancy, risk management, security measures, and solid waste management are crucial for sustainable building, but are not adequately assessed in existing tools. Additionally, consideration of environmental, economic, and social factors is essential in the construction industry.

Carbon footprinting of universities worldwide: Part I-objective comparison by standardized metrics

Eckard Helmers et al.

Summary: Universities around the world play a key role in driving innovation towards a carbon-neutral society, yet only a small number of them are collecting and publishing their carbon footprints. This study analyzed comprehensive carbon footprint data from 20 universities globally, identifying key factors contributing to their carbon footprints. By homogenizing carbon footprint performances using various metrics, the study found that some universities have achieved per capita carbon footprints close to or below 1.0 Mt CO2e/person and year, regardless of their size.
