Optimal Capacity and Cost Analysis of Battery Energy Storage System in Standalone Microgrid Considering Battery Lifetime

Pinit Wongdet et al.

Summary: In standalone microgrids, the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a popular energy storage technology. This paper proposes a capacity optimization method that takes into account the BESS lifetime, using the weighted Wh throughput method to estimate the BESS lifetime and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to maximize battery capacity and minimize the total net present value. The results show that optimizing the BESS capacity can significantly reduce operation costs and the proposed strategy can be applied to larger power systems for further cost reduction.

Distributed energy resources for water resource recovery facilities: A metropolitan city case study

Ahmed Mohamed et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the application of distributed energy resources (DERs) at water resource recovery facilities (WRRF). The financial and demand management implications of different DER combinations are analyzed, and the optimal size for energy storage solutions is determined based on the goals of the WRRF. A case study of a Medium sized WRRF is used to compare different implementation strategies, and the ideal combination of DERs is determined based on various scenarios. The goal is to understand the potential of DERs for managing peak demand and resilience at WRRFs.
